p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Russian sailor in Dubrovnik-

Back when it was still the USSR- a Soviet warship anchored offshore, and the sailors spent some time as tourists in the medieval town.
They stayed together in groups, mostly. I tried to communicate with this sailor using basic travelers' sign language, but he didn't understand anything, including pointing at myself and saying "American."
Well, at least he didn't attack me .

Unusually he's from the Northern Fleet (Murmansk in the Arctic Circle) but you met him in the Med. Maybe he needed a break from the snow!

And as for Commies looking evil, even the Nazis didn't look evil. That's the thing - how normal people can do such terrible things in the wrong circumstances.

Thanks for the comments, Zal and Ian.
This man was probably Russian, and among the people of Russia are the descendants of the original Caucasians. Most Russians look like typical Caucasians around the world- all different but sharing some physical traits.
About the whole question of Communism and Communists (and Nazis)- I'm no expert, but here's my considered opinions:
Few Russians were Communists (which was the ruling political party). This sailor was almost certainly NOT a Communist.
About the Nazis- much the same thing. The Nazis were a political party that ruled Germany under Adolf Hitler. Very few Germans (including the military) were Nazis; they were just Germans following their leader. Unfortunately, Adolf Hitler was a seriously bad person.
Sadly- movies, TV shows, etc. often use the terms Nazi and German interchangeably. They are NOT.
Germans are just normal people. Russians are just normal people.
The vast majority of large-scale "evils" throughout the world's history have been caused by political leaders; the worst have been those who primarily sought power for themselves.
The best way to avoid this is to have free elections by the people of a nation. It's not perfect- but what is?
To paraphrase Winston Churchill: "Democracy is the worst system- except for all the others."
Winny deserves the last word.

Only one democracy has ever declared war on another.
