I've been looking at some of my older Rolleiflex F f2.8 Planar images scanned by my Nikon 8000 and delighting in the tonality and acuity when compared to my digital B&W FF shots.
I wouldn't necessarily say that there is more detail in the 6X6 images, but they give the impression of being both sharper as well as having a much richer tonality, which I cannot match with the 5DII and its best lenses.
Has anyone been able to match what they have been able to do previously with good 6X6 images, scanned on a high quality scanner? (I don't include the Epson V scanners in this category). If so, what combination of camera/lens/post are you using?
Im sure some people will be along with stories of how their micro 4/3rd cameras beat such and such medium format but I will say that in the realm of black and white photography modern films up to 100 iso in formats larger than 645 cannot be touched by 35mm digital.
think what you will of Erwin Puts, but he has a somewhat recent article on the Nano Edge film. you can ignore all of the text and look at the images; the 12 iso film slaughtered an M9.
if you want to match medium format film then stitch or get a medium format camera. alternatively, keep your print sizes sufficiently small and it doesn't make a practical difference.
