I see lots of discussions regarding the 7D ability to focus (and the 100-400 also). So given that I'm a complete novice, plus this 100-400 is new to me (just bought in early Sept) I thought I'd post some of a shot sequence. Low light, tough background/foreground. But it hit 8 out of 11 shots. Not bad all things considered.

Not bad BUT you can go higher on the ISO than that. 3200 would look just as good based on my experience, and in that light I'd have tried even higher even after the deer was gone just to see how high I could push it before not liking the results.

Thanks for the info. I had it on auto ISO. I've always heard that the high ISO produced a lot of noise. My experience is that it does "sometimes". And I can't figure out why it does at times and not others. Subject matter, shadows etc I'm sure all contribute, but I'm just starting to learn.

High ISO is manageable if you watch your exposure. If you underexpose at 1/3 to 2/3 stop at ISO 6400 or above is going to cause you a bit of grief. Keep exposures to the right, and adjust down if needed.

Thought I was seeing IR shots

Noise is often most problematic when a scene has a high dynamic range, with noise appearing most strongly in the shadows and dark tones.
In your shot, there were mostly shades of light brown, and shooting at a higher ISO setting probably wouldn't have resulted in excessive noise, but would have allowed an even faster shutter speed. (You could even have gone a bit faster at this ISO and still have stayed within acceptable exposure limits. As it is, whites are very close to -- if not actually -- clipping.)

This is one of mine at ISO 3200, very minor processing if any. (7D / Tamrom 18-270 VC lens) That was all I had that vacation not counting my G9 & housing for my diving.

RE first shot out of focus
I think that for continuous shooting/AI Servo mode, the Canon AF system is 'release priority' for the first shot, then 'focus priority' for subsequent shots (though you may be able to change this under custom functions)
This means that it will often miss on the first shot (because it fires before it's locked on), but the second and subsequent frames in a burst will be good

I can see how you all "shoot to the right" in these amazing shots you've posted. I learn every day I'm out there, and every day I'm on the FM forums. Thank you all.
