Those of you using PayPal better think again. It's only a matter of time before you wake up one morning and find an email saying thousands of dollars have been swiped from your bank account. Trust me.

Scary. Is it the same with Square?
Not that I've seen yet, but I've only taken a couple of payments that way. I generally push cash or check. The main thing is, if people want to screw you, they can. Any merchant must allow chargebacks. PayPal just makes it super easy with a mouse click. You really have to feel out the client. This is why I try to stay away from credit.
We've only had a handful of clients use PayPal, but it scares me to think of a chargeback. I'd like to thing that my clients wouldn't ever do that to me, but you never know...
I used to handle all the chargebacks for a resort where all the bookings were online/phone. Without a signature, you're pretty well screwed. It depends though... I will say this, merchant services other than PayPal (haven't used square) are a lot more willing to work with non-refundable situations than PayPal is. PayPal is pretty straight forward when it comes to a chargeback. 90% of the time they could care less that you have a non-refundable retainer contract signed... if you didn't deliver any goods, they're getting their $$ back.

This is dead true. My other business sells specialty software. I know I should be handling it through something different, but we've used PayPal for nearly a decade. Even though we have a non-refundable policy due to digital goods, PayPal simply doesn't care; and allows the buyer to chargeback with a few clicks of the mouse. I don't worry too much about it because it's somewhat rare and the average sell is only around $125-150; but I would never use it for wedding photography where thousands of dollars can be returned from my bank account with the click of the mouse. With PayPal, you will damn near always lose the case.

In Canada we have a lovely thing called Interac e-transfer where clients can send money by email through their online banking. Free to me. They pay $1.50 transfer fee. Love it!![/quot
I still prefer check. I put them in the wells fargo ATMS that they offer free check image receipts. I file those receipts. I take PayPal a few times a year, more for commercial and video work though.
thanks god paypal here gets pretty limited possibilities because you can revert all bank charges online. So if paypal tries to remove some moneys from your account, you just click and have it back. Then they have to prove it was legit.
I prefer checks for the reason mentioned above (check image on receipt at ATMs). I also use Square for CC payments. Anything that makes it easier for the client to spend money works for me.
I use Paypal for eBay purchase but would never use it to accept payments. They have a proven track record of not giving a crap about sellers.
I accept credit cards. Most people use them to purchase large ticket items. However, because I offer payment plans for albums, some recent clients have simply paid for those by check.

Sounds like you've got some government regulations we could use here in the US...
We only take checks. We've never had a couple with a problem with it.

I take both and have found that about 75% pay with check and 25% with credit card. I wish they all paid with check in order to avoid the credit card processing fees.
Cash or check, "gift" (no fees) Paypal if they HAVE to use a CC. So far, everyone seems to come up with a check. I scan in the checks with my phone, takes about the same time to deposit a check as it does to swipe a CC, and no fees.
