I'm in my second year as the official photographer for the Kansas State University Pride of Wildcat Land Marching Band and, I must say, it's one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had. The kids work their tails off, are polite and respectful, appreciate anything anyone does for them, and put on a kick-a** show each home game. And, since I'm considered staff, wherever the band goes Scott (and family!) goes, too, which has been fun during bowl season!
Having said that, I'm not 100% thrilled with photos I'd captured three games into the season. The first and third games were night games. Also, it was so hot the day of the first game the director made the decision to get the kids out of their uniforms for the game, so they performed in their "secondary" uniforms (basically shorts and shirts). Anyway, enough of my backstory. Here are a few from the season so far.
Thanks for looking.
Catching a quick drink during a break in rehearsal.
When shooting college (Florida Atlantic and Troy universities) and high school football, I always focus on the band and other support groups. They make for great photos and deserve the attention.

Holy cow Scott. That is some official sounding title you there. I'm just trying to imagine how big your business cards must be to fit all of that on there.
Really nice set of shots. I often struggle with whether to open it up on shots like 6, 7 & 8 in an effort to show ALL the people in the line -- or to simply focus on the first one. Sure like the way you handled it. Thanks for sharing.
Scott... that middle set is killer. I love the symmetry and patterns. That kid in the beginning is really creeping me out... and I'm not talking about Sean this time...
Great stuff Scott! I shoot our high school band with the occasional football/cheerleader as well. I too, find the band kids to be the most appreciative.
That guy in the first image is a trombone player, Paul, so those lips gotta be just right! I hate to think I'm jaded from shooting so many band images during the course of a season, but I keep trying to find that cool angle for getting the symmetry and/or patterns. I could get a row full of any instrument (literally), but never quite feel like I'm getting that "wow" shot. Guess that's why I enjoy continuing to shoot...still searching! Glad you like 'em.
Jarvis, Sean's been rockin' the mullet for a couple of years now and it's way more cool than anything I ever had! Ha! Plus, it's not just having a mullet, it's the personality that goes along with it. He gets quite a few comments and looks with it, and even got some airtime on the jumbo tron at a game a couple of weeks ago. He was in the stands (not shooting that game) and the video guy came over and told him he had to get such a "cool" mullet some air time!! Ha!
I look forward to seeing some of the band shots a few of you mentioned getting next time you're out! Thanks again.
Funny, I started shooting more band stuff this year already. The shots are on my site, I will post some from last night soon...Good to see you are still around Scott, God Bless you and yours...
Great set Scott. I thought the same about your middle set as well....especially liking the one with the tuba's with the reflections in the bell making it look like a "fisheye" reflection.
