I walked to my local waterfall this morning and spent some time learning more about my 24mm TS-E II; an incredibly sharp lens, but the vertical terrain here causes me some problems...arranging the plane of focus to cover both the rock at my feet and the top of the falls is...difficult; so much so that I haven't yet managed it to my satisfaction, but it's hard to tell on this web-sized file.
On the same trail is a plant that blooms (or "fruits") in the fall, called "Hearts-a-Bustin' ". I've shot this particular plant several years in a row in different conditions, and it looks pretty healthy this year...I use the same lens every time, the 70-200 f/2.8 II...

How 'bout those artfully arranged colored leaves? :)
From this morning...
The same bush, two years ago, with fall leaves in full flame...

Kenneth, in the hands of a fine photographer like yourself, a 400 f/2.8 IS MkI, which are priced very favourably these days, would "sing".
Then, combine it with 1.4xTC MkIII and 2xTC MkIII, and you are ready for just about any photography type.

What a good start. I am glad to see Jerry post a very different, yet absolutely great, vision of Great blue herons, so I shall go into another extreme. The same bird individual, the same gear, but different light as well as background.
The bird with a minnow and another one with a mosquito.
1DX + 400 f/2.8 IS MkI.
Absolutely beautiful images Peter, including the top ones of the ducks. It seems you have more than mastered the 1DX.
Thank you kindly, Kathy .......1DX still has some little irritating features for me, but overall it does work well, particularly the AF system and high ISO handling, probably very much like your 5DMkIII.
Here is one simple duckshot with fallish coloured background. In this case the perspective is very "level" with the duck because the camera/lens was lowered almost to the water level. That low perspective is a dominant strategy by "birders" to achieve the coveted N&W forum "look".
7D + 85L @ f/1.2........."blind" framing as well as auto AF pt.selection used.
60D (articulated display) would help with shots of this type.

Peter, this is about the nicest image you've posted. Ever. (in my humble opinion). I love everything about this photo and wish it was mine. I will now take my gear down to the river and drop kick it into the abyss.
My first for this thread from the mining area of Virginia City, taken with the 7D and 24-105L riding shotgun up front...
Regards,
Edd
For a moment I was about to ask you if it was really a 7D and how the hell did you get that 100% crop from the first image, the horses were looking so clear I was astonished.
