p.4 #2 · 5D2 vs 6D: What's your verdict?

I see ZERO, ZIPPO reason to go from a 5D2 to a 6D. I'm sure the 5D2 will be discontinued when the 6D gets close to coming out. I have no idea if Canon has said anything about this yet.

The 5D3 is even a questionable upgrade for anyone that uses their 5D2 for static-ish subjects at low to medium ISOs and doesn't care about frivolities such as in-camera HDR and the like. I am one such user; if I want fast, I have a 7D and a 1D4.

Nothing against the 5D3... If I were buying my 1st FF camera today, it would be a 5D3... If for no other reason than I would want a good 5 years out of it. IDK if Canon will still be supporting the 5D2 5 years from now.

The 6D will be of interest to anyone looking to get into FF on a budget. Period. Maybe there are millions of these people out there or maybe there aren't.... Canon obviously thinks so.

If one can afford it, the 5D3 is a much better choice as an entry FF Canon. Looking at current 5D3 price trends ($2800-ish on the low end), the 6D at $2k is overpriced. I think this camera needs to come in at about $1700 to be viable. If there's not a good $1,000+ difference between the 6D and 5D3, why buy one when the 5D3 offers so much more.

Just my .02.

Hard to give an opinion since I haven't used either and the fact that the 6D isn't out yet.

It's quite obvious this upgrade is for rebel and 60D users that want to move on to FF but can't afford a 5D3. Yes we would have all loved a better AF system, heck even slightly better (or even slightly better on paper via all cross type points). Maybe we'll be lucky and the AF system will have outerpoints reliable/usable.

I think for most that are coming from a rebel/6D, they would likely get a 6D over a 5D2, especially when retail prices start coming down, unless used 5D2's come down to <$1200. Then again if 5D3's start coming down even more (lets say <$2500) I think many will just get that instead. At the end it really boils down to one's needs and overall budget.

I think if you already own a 5DII, you might not want to upgrade. But I own a 5Dc, I think I will upgrade, especially for the GPS and wifi capabilities.

p.4 #6 · 5D2 vs 6D: What's your verdict?

The more I look at it I'm starting to see even less to like about the 6D and I'm not sure who the camera is really for. Here's a comparison of features between the 5D3, 5D2, 6D, 7D, and the 60D...

6D - Yes
7D - No
60D - No

Variable LCD:
5D3 - No
5D2 - No
6D - No
7D - No
60D - Yes

So, aside from GPS and WiFi the 6D isn't anything exciting... basically a 5D2 hacked down a bit, but with Digic 5+, a newer sensor, and improved shutter lag.

Max shutter speed of only 1/4000 is silly when the 60D can do 1/8000 and X-Sync is stupid at 1/180 sec (of course the 5D2 and 5D3 not having 1/250 sec like the 60D and 7D is equally confusing).

While the center AF point may work as low as EV -3 all the others don't work below EV +.5 (so you probably just don't want to use them a la the 5D2)... so basically only one AF point... kind of like Medium Format Digital, but without the big sensor and megapixels.

Anyone knows how sensitive the outer focus points of 5D2 is? I don't think Canon's ever revealed the info before and I doubt it goes down to -0.5 EV.

According to Canon it would seem that all of the 5D2 AF points have a working range of -0.5 to 18, however, I completely agree with you as the outer points on all of the 5D2's I've owned/used were basically worthless.

My point exactly. So in the centre point the 6D should trump all other cameras (don't know what 1DX is capable).
I wish someone could enlighten us with outer AF points EV range ....maybe its not that bad uh ?

They complain, because other cameras have it.
In fact I used 1/8000s about two or three times the last 3.5 years. I was still to drunken to realize, that I could pull down ISO 3.200 after last nights concert shooting ended late (or early) in the backstage area ...

I think, even if it only has 11 points, most people would have been a lot happier if they're all cross-type.

But I guess we'll have to wait and see how the camera performs. When 6D is available, we'll probably see some tests on outer AF points between 6D against 5D2 or even D600. If 6D performs the best among this group of camera, it might yet again be another big seller for Canon.

You don't need to be at f1.2. At f1.6 you're just about there with 1/8000th, so f2.5 for 1/4000th (unless my maths is wrong this late )

I'd say that presents at least an occasional problem for a fair number of people who use primes.

This is a problem for me and my 200 1.8. I love the look of shooting wide open in bright sun. I don't do it a lot, but I would hate to lose the option (and have to carry NDs). I am interested in the high iso and low light center AF with interchangeable screens. If I can get RAW 6400 on the 6D to be as clean as RAW 3200 on 5DII (with low banding) I may get one, but not in the initial release. I may skip this generation and wait for the next big thing from canon. The 5DIII is not that appealing to me because I don't shoot a lot of action and the focusing screen can't be changed. I like shooting my 100 Zeiss Makro Planar on my EG-S screen. I can shoot with my 50 1.2 in the "dark" (6400, or H1 an 1.2 and 1/50th) manual focus and get a decent hit rate.

I use a polarizer in bright sun when using fast glass, otherwise you can easily hit 1/8000 at f/1.4

dshipley -- Not to be argumentative, but when you list it all like that, the 6D looks more favorable to my reasoning. It is usually not the worst of the five, and in several categories it is the leader or tied for the lead. The only really "negative" where all others excel is the top shutter speed. But that is pretty much a non-issue for me, same as the flash sync -- not critical features.

If it has awful center AF point, then I'd say it's crash and burn time for the 6D. But the AF looks promising, and the ISO awesome, and lack of noise seems possibly great as well.

We now know that the sensor size is a smidgen smaller than the other FF sensors, so the 6D's 20MP actually puts it in almost identical relationship to the 5D3's 22MP. Whether they are the same sensor design otherwise, we'll have to find out. But if the 6D kicks out essentially the same IQ as the 5D3, that should raise its value to many potential owners.

No referring to you, but I think its a little early for all the rash judgments I've been reading on the forums, condemning the 6D before anyone has even tried it.

Again, I look at it as more of an upgrade for 5D owners, or those who would have contemplated buying a used 5D to get into FF, rather than a replacement for 5D2 -- that is the 5D3. This is really a second modern upgrade from the 5Dc for buyers interested in Canon product line.

Getting a 5D2 now and a 5D3 in 1.5 years. I like to buy cameras long after they've been introduced so the bugs are solved and the price comes down. The 6D doesn't attract me because I think the 5D2, for my purposes, is better where it counts. I only see added value in the sensor, but as long as I stick to ISO3200 max, the 5D2 is clean enough.

Nikon is much less way to go for me. Not that I dont like their cams, but as alt lens base its not easiest. 6D could be nice, if less crippled and cheaper. Canon apparently isnt Sony. :/ Neither performance of that thing is. So old 5Dc or 5DMK2 it is.. tho I will more likely buy very old 1DsMK2.

The 6D looks perfectly OK for its target market, at least once its price settles down to a sensible level.

But there seems precious little reason for most of us to exchange our 5D2s for one. I am personally fairly surprised to be saying that I have very little incentive to upgrade to any of Canon's newly released FF bodies, don't know whether to be disappointed, or grateful to Canon for allowing me to get another 3 years value out of my 5D2. I certainly feel that the current models (1DX, 5D3, 6D) will be around at the very least until the 5D4 releases around 2015 (with the possible exception of a highly priced hi res FF body which might appear sooner).

So I suspect its hibernation mode for my bank account till then.

EV 1 is so dim I can't see much through the VF even with a fast prime, so .5 EV is a long ways from daylight.
