As for the bag, I use an old Lowepro D-Res 30 AW. It's a little larger than the Apex 60. There is room for the RX1 with hood, a box with a filter, a couple of batteries and cards and a small power supply. I don't have a viewfinder but there is enough room at the top to store one I think.

'the lens wasn't as fast enough for amazing bokeh'.

Many things impact bokeh, including lens speed; the RX1's Sonnar is renowned for its lovely OOF, in fact all serious reviewers mention this as one of its strongest points - 'bokelicious' said one.

Exposure is easily handled in the histo display, I seldom use more than 1/3 stop EC. Lifting shadows is a 2 second slider job. I find ACR does a bang up job with colour balance. In fact WB and exposure accuracy are strong points of the camera, IMO. Raw files are among the easiest/most robust to work, and therefore very fast to optimise, also widely recognised.

Apparently I've accidentally agreed to purchase a second hand one for Ģ1500 w/o finder. What do you think? I kind of wonder if prices might drop a little after the FF NEX announcements.

Well, Jochen, you shall forever be responsible now. I hope you realise what you've take on Still feeling pretty guilty due to the fact that I told myself I wouldn't buy anything this year at all. However, once I sell my a700 & 58/1.2 I'll feel much better.

What are the suggestions on the thumbs up attachment? Just wondering if the cheap ones are terrible, or whether any of them are worth going for.

If you plan on ever using the EVF, it will not work with any of the Thumbs Up type grips. Otherwise, the Sony is expensive but unique in that it conveniently flips out of the way when needed. I had one for a while and it was very comfortable. I have not been impressed by the cheap Thumb's Up knock offs from China.

Now though, I do like to use the EVF myself so any of the Thumbs Up type grips are a no go. I have been very happy with the ergonomics and overall design (well made, not too heavy or bulky) of the newer Fotodiox grip here:

I bought my RX1 used with the original thumb grip, and it was a great improvement to the handling of the camera. Unfortunately, one day this ridiculously priced little piece of metal fell off despite the little securing lever, and was gone. I will never buy this thing at the price they are asking for it, and I have ordered this cheap little piece of metal instead, currently on its way from ebay.

It can of course not be used with neither EVF nor OVF.

@Tariq: I'm definiately starting with an OVF, so that isn't an immediate concern (although I am aware it won't work with an EVF). I can see such a grip would be a good alternate, and perhaps better. Right now I'm not sure which route is best to go down - I guess I'd kind of prefer a skin/half case thing that attaches to the bottom to protect it a little, which would rule out a grip like you suggested.

@twoeye: Thanks for the recommendation. I can't see myself buying a Sony one due to the price - but at the same time I'm not so keen on the colour/branding on the one you suggested!

I'm reluctant to get something random. I wouldn't want to damage the shoe as it's pretty important..

I was holding out for this half case with built in grip for a long time but it never became available until recently. Looks well made and ergonomic.

Douglas bought a cheap half case off the auction site which I believe he was very happy with. You might look back through the thread to find it.

One possible negative with the original Sony Thumbs Up is that if you use an OVF, it will sit much higher causing more inaccuracy with framing.

Yes, the branding is ugly as hell, but I donīt care too much. I will alternate between an EVF, an Olympus VF-1 OVF and this thing in the hotshoe.

The Olympus VF-1 is also ordered and on its way for testing, not the perfect match for the RX1 from an esthetic point of view but I hope I will like it better than the EVF that many like but I find myself using only when I really need it, bright sunlight etc. It is a little big.

Plus the fact that the frame lines in the Olympus are for a different aspect ratio than 35. I guess you will have more than shown on the left and right and less on the top and bottom *viewed horizontally" in the captured image due to this.

@Tariq: A good point, I think a case with some sort of grip extension will be the best combination for using an OVF. That one you linked looks pretty nice too! Around Ģ100, I think. I'll check back and see what Douglas is using... I imagine it's one where you have to take the entire case off to change the battery, which could be a faff, but I guess not too bad.

@twoeye: I think I'd probably search for something "ancient" rather than the Oly one, due to the different aspect ratio. But it could be a good/affordable alternate, let us know how it goes.

I will have to live with the different aspect ratio, but I want to try if an OVF works for me, and the VF-1 is supposed to be of good quality at a reasonable price.

Here is the case I have. The leather is a little waxy feeling and not super high quality, but it doesn't bother me much, and the design of the case is pretty good. No need to remove for battery/SD removal. Link

I don't know what you're talking about...

I'm sure you'll enjoy it, almost everyone does. If you have regrets, just sell it again.

I had the VF-1 for my ex-Leica X1. It's just fine. Sure the framelines won't perfectly match, but you'll get used to that fairly quickly.
Found an example on Flickr (not mine):

Ah, thanks Douglas, I was just making my eyes bleed searching through this huge thread so glad you chimed in. That was one of the cheaper ones that I had looked at, so I'll keep that in mind. Curious, do you use this and no other grip-type-attachments, and you find it okay to handle?
