Nikon doesn't mix Coolpix and DSLR announcements and I suspect you will hear something official a few days before Photokina, although the rumors and leaks will occur a week or so before then for sure as they always seem to do.
Even if they do announce at Photokina it will be a couple of months before the D600 would become available.

Hold tight my friend!!

Hi John, you know you're right, I forgot all about that. I am holding tight, but you know all to well that that is easier said then done.

Ain't that the truth. I've got the itch for an FX upgrade and I'm having an extremely hard time withholding from a low use D700, in hopes that the D600 will be in the same price range.
While there have been a few leaks already, they normally heat up before an actual announcement. If the body is coming out, we'll see more leaked info before hand. I'm not convinced we'll see it at Photokina. The D800 and D4 are still very new, who knows though.

I think they are a little off their schedule due to the disasters. Some schedule compression is probably going to happen.

I'm with you!! But i think i'd still get a d700, prob to the tune of $1,300 or so...the QC on new nikon bodies is terrible lately, i'm sure the D600 will be no different...
I'm happily shooting with my D7000 for now but the rumored specs and rumored price point on the D600 are exactly what I'm looking for. As a result I'm actually already on a wait list at my local Nikon dealer. Could be a long wait but I'm thinking the rumors will heat up in the next few weeks and we'll see a D600 at photokinia.

That's was my other thought....
I've used a D700 (my studio partners), I've produced great work with a D700, and I know whats its capabilities are. It would serve me well over the next 4 to 5 years I'm sure, just as my D90 has.
But you can't help but wonder what the D600 might hold in store...

I think the handicapped AF will slow a few down.
The rumors are that it will get pretty much the same AF system as the D7K, which is no slouch.
I read in another thread here that the D7K isn't as happy with TC's and especially Superzooms as a D300s, but that is a (relatively) small group of folks. Having seen plenty of work from Trenchmonkey with his D7K's, including lots of BIF and rodeo work, I don't think you can call the AF "handicapped" (though a good operator doesn't hurt, either )
I think the bigger gap is for those of us looking for a D300s replacement. But honestly, I just got a D300s to replace my D90, and I couldn't be happier. Yeah, I'd like ISO 100 and some additional ISO/DR, but the D600 has kind of freed me from wondering about my next camera for a while. I chose the D300s over a D7000 for handling and over a D400 because it might never exist. The D600 just isn't interesting to me unless it is crazy cheap (think $1499 or less). Even then, I'm so happy with the handling of the D300s that I'd probably just buy a D700 over a D600. Knowing it is coming and not a D400 (at least any time soon) gave me the incentive to snap up a really sweet camera, and I'm enjoying the heck out of it!
My guess is the D600 will come in at $1899 or $1999 and do very well for a whole lot of people, but I won't buy one.
Most may already know this but for those that don't the D700 is being listed as discontinued at many retailers which leaves room for a lower resolution FX body in the Nikon lineup. Which seems to make a D600 announcement more probable.

Yea, I just saw the news this morning, kind of sad really.

I just want the D700 with two memory slots, 24mp and 8fps. That's the perfect camera for me. It's basically the D3x but, yeah, just yeah.
with no af or other issues, trustable and below 3000 dollars then it's my camera.

Or the D3.... And hey, they are probably cheap now on the used market.
A more recent rumor has the AF at 51 points.
I really doubt that.
An improved D7000 AutoFocus module would be good enough for me,
that and better high ISO performance.
I already ordered mine and will take two at $1500.
If Nikon does not announce by PhotoKina, I will get a D800e.
