I'm in tears and just speechless. Very sorry for your loss - so many emotions swirling around. Profound on so many levels.

I remember your posted and commenting. Kind of a coincidence that it pops up again as my dad who's 82 has been battling lung cancer just found out he only has a few weeks, maybe a month left. You try and remember the happy times but it's still heartbreaking.
As sad as your story is it gives me a sad good feeling.
Hopefully your mom is still healthy, enjoy her.

Thanks, Sharona. I think it's the mixture of sadness in the passing, and the joy in celebrating his life, that strange combination, that makes this heartfelt the way it has been.

Bob, I really appreciate that. It was cathartic for me to share this moment, and I never imagined it would touch so many people the way that it has. And here it is, almost a year later, and it's still making a circle. It wasn't an easy decision to share this, but I'm really happy that I did.

gilead, thanks so much -- and my heart goes to you. Needless to say, but spend as much time with him as you can. It's crazy, but you'll cherish these final weeks as much as any other times in your lives together.

As for my Mom, she's blind, fiercely independent, and really missing my Dad a lot. We used to talk once a week, but now it's part of my routine to call her on my way home from work each day. I know she looks forward to the calls,and it's really helped her.

I saw this just lurking around, and I have to say... I was quote moved by the images, by the story they all tell. Absolutely beautiful, brings tears to my eyes. You could see the love both for, and from his family in such a manner that you almost forget the sadness that comes with the passing.

Pictures truly convey what words alone cannot, sometimes.

Our dads are close to the same age.....Mine will be 90 this Thanksgiving....

Thank you very much for sharing....I have to tell you those photos hit very close to home for me, when I was done with the last photo I had tears in my eyes. I can feel your pain and dread the day I will have to face the same pain.....

Is there any better way to leave this earth than to be surrounded by so many who love you so much. Some would say that your dad was a lucky man. But luck does not bring love, nor does it bring the smile that seemed to be always on his face in each of the pictures, from all the way back in his Navy days till those last few precious moments. The kind of love that brings that joy comes from deep inside, and obviously touched everyone around him. It seems that he got what he gave, and I would be willing to bet he gave a lot more than everyone ever knew. I went through a very similar situation with my mom two years ago, and never thought of picking up a camera through it all. Thank you for sharing this with all of us. In my mind it is a photo journalistic piece which shows that, with love, there is great dignity in both life and death. My best to you, your mother and all of your family. I know there is strength amongst all of you.

That's cool, Micky Bill! Enjoy your time with him! For me, the last few years were the best because we became so much more open with each other about our feelings for each other. When you're younger, it's like you take it for granted, or I did, that my Dad would live forever. As it became evident that he was getting seriously older/aging, I really made a point of talking to him more, seeing him more, and really making sure he knew how much I appreciated him. Now doing the same with my Mom.

This was an incredible post. Looking through your series, I could feel the love you feel for your family, and for your father. I was touched by the moments of honesty- and I felt them as if I were experiencing them first hand. I'm so sorry for your loss, but thank you for opening your life and sharing such touching photos.
