These are a few steps that I check
1) Shutter count
2) USA version(How do i check if its a USA version)?
3) Recent Raw Images
3.1) check for dead pixels
3.2) should get a photo of all ISOs?
3.3) Should I check battery life?
4) Scratches / damages

You'd probably get better feedback on this if posted in the Nikon Gear Forum...there you will find better informed people regarding the D3s. In general, I do know that Nikon USA is very particular about accepting 'grey market' products for service so I think knowing whether or not it is an actual USA version is very important...but your best sources of info will be over on the Nikon Forum.
