p.1 #1 · The best hummingbird photo I've taken so far!

Just got a 70-200 2.8 IS MkII, and while I don't have any of the super-tele lenses, I still like to try my hand at bird photography whenever I get a chance. This morning, after weeks of a heat wave, I noticed the hummingbirds had returned to our feeders. This shot was taken at about 10am today, natural light, handheld on a 7D. I was about 5-6 feet away - hooray for the 7D's cropping capabilities! The light and background turned out perfect. The bird was in almost direct sunlight. The shutter speed was fast enough that the green trees in the distant background, which were in shadow were completely blacked out.

Cheers!
William

Dude, that is awesome! Really, really awesome. The lighting compaired to the background is such a contrast it looks like it was shot in a studio. Very nice work!

Thank you! I know, I couldn't really believe it myself. I didn't even do that much post-processing either aside from cropping, WB adjust, some NR and good ole unsharp mask. Didn't even touch the contrast or other tone sliders in LR.

William:

A great best capture to this point! Now get out there and try for no feeder.

Ah man, Ted, amazing shots! Yeah, I would love to get some sans feeder. Around my house at least, I don't seem to see hummers not at the feeders. Are those flowers in your shots particularly attractive for hummingbirds? Maybe I need to visit a botanical garden that has hummingbirds?
