It LOOKS like glass but it's not, it's a crystal (maybe lithium niobate).

The 800E has two layers with approximate cancellation between them. It's possible that only one is cracked. Maybe bonding the two together enhances the chances for breakage??

How is it possible that a crack in the sensor would be in focus? This seems like something else to me...

The crack in the second photo is much clearer, and the aperture is much smaller (f10) than in the first photo. This is why dust bunnies and such tend to appear at f8, f11 and f16 but are not noticed at f2.8.

Was able to get a replacement so not sure what ever ended up being the actual problem here.
