Would there be THAT much difference in image quality between a 1D mark 4 and a 5D mark3?
Could you see it in a print 20x30?

I honestly had a love/hate relationship with my Mark IVs. The image quality is generally very good but I think does not quite match the 5D2. I found colors to be a bit less pleasing SOOC, but using Adobe's profile when shooting RAW helped a lot.

I often found that the camera was noisier than expected in the middle ISO range from 400-1600 (much like Canon's latest APS-C sensors). In addition, the files did not seem to take noise reduction that well; fine detail seemed to smear a bit more quickly than with some other cameras.

Higher ISOs were better; once you exceeded 1600, the RAW images could be worked a bit more easily than the 5D2; I had no hesitation shooting events up to ISO 6400 in RAW.

These are subjective impressions rather than being based on controlled testing, and I didn't own my 1D IVs all that long; I'm sure others will chime in in support of the Mark IV.

Course he's asking about a 5D3.

I'd say it would be unlikely even at that size to notice a difference. Advantage may go to the 5D3 simply for having more pixels to enable clearer enlargements.

I did some quick head-to-head comparisons between my 1DIV and a friend's 5DIII. The extra megapixels make a difference, but in the images I took, the differences were not sufficient for me to give up my pro body and 1.3x reach. I didn't see much difference in DR. Color might be a bit better.

At the moment, I intend to wait for Photokina to see if Canon brings out a pro body that is not dedicated to speed. I don't need 12fps but would love 24MP, higher DR, and more vivid, accurate color. Given the computing power in the 1DX, if Canon chose to dedicate that power to IQ, I think they'd have a winner for landscape/wildlife, all-purpose photographers like me, rather than sports photographers who might actually use 12fps.

I shot with the Mark IV at a recent lacrosse state championship. Beautiful light before sunset brightly illuminating the players, and the background bushes and trees were a dark, rich green edging towards black. Typical for this field at this time of day. Then I switched to the 5DIII. Same lens, same (manual exposure) settings. The brightly lit players looked great, but the dark background vegetation looked terrible; the dark colors were not smooth and almost looked underexposed. I'm going to try reprocessing the shots in DPP to see if the problem with the shadows was a Lightroom issue, but I'm curious if anyone else has encountered this phenomenon in high contrast, HDR situations.

I used the 5dIII again after dark and it handled the high ISO like a champ. I shot at ISO 8000, 10000 and 12800 and got lots of usable shots. Autofocus didn't struggle either.

Today I tried the 5DIII against the 1DIV in a gym with nasty cycling lights, and the 5DIII AWB was amazing. Of course, its fps are considerably less, but there was almost no shift visible in consecutive frames.

Just moved from 1DIV to 5DIII; image IQ was my last concern about 1D, since I loved it very, very much; I am not absolutely sure to have upgraded on that matter...

But 5DIII has a wonderful AF (much better in dark), and everything I always dreamed in a body, size/weight included, so it was a no brainer to me

I have both cameras and IQ is not ever a consideration for me in terms of which camera to use.....it is all about things like FPS and high ISO performance and full frame vs 1.3 crop etc....at this point and this level of camera I think you have to be looking for differences in order to be able to say one camera is dramatically better than the other IQ wise

Hello wib3,

this link will give you a direct comparison (jpeg and raw) at all ISOs between 5D III, 1D IV, 5D II and D800. You can navigate the 100% area to any place in the full image via mouse (click and move). You might also download the full size images and print them yourself.

My old 1DMKIV at high ISO(over 1200) handheld was unbeatable! The image IQ was also excellant at those hi ISO's.
I have not tried my 5DIII yet at those high ISO's but I imagine with the higher pixel count, the resultant printed image will be excellant also. The noise on the 5D3 is better but with good CS5/6 and NIK Dfine...negligable.

I agree with "jonbrach" 100%

I shot my 5Dmk3 and 1Dmk4 one after the other on Sunday. The files look to me, very similar (like Ultrapix intimated). The 5D3 files might be up to 1/2 a stop better with ISO performance and the 1Dmk4 files seems a bit more contrasty SOOC (5D3 slightly better DR?) but at a glance its hard to tell them apart.

The 5D3 files are great to work with IMO and I think highlight recovery is very good too (I avoid pushing the shadows too vigorously ). For faster action I'm still preferring the handling and speed of the 1Dmk4. For now, it gives me greater confidence and the 5D3 obviously can't match the fps.

As always YMMV, this is just my opinion based on using MY cameras and pixel peeping the RAW files. I love them both and I think its an awesome pair of bodies going forward. No buyers remorse here

For me both are similar but my 3200+ stuff I prefer the 5Dmk3.
The edges seem more contrasty giving for my night aviation stuff a better cleaner final image.
Both have great IQ but I do like the hi stuff of the mk3 a little more..

Me too! I really missed the C-1 to C-3 as well.

FF vs crop nearly a stop better DOF how can you even say the 1D4 has the same image quality. It can't compare.

What has DOF got to do with image quality (in general)?

And what is "better" DOF?

It's all subjective so what's better is personal

Shallower DOF doesnot better IQ make though...

Only difference I could see is better noise resistance in compare with my former mk4, I could shot very clean shots up to ISO3200 with 5d3. Otherwise I like both IQ very much, 1d3 shots even better I posted some high iso shots here:

I've found my 1D MK IV, my 5D MK II and 5D MK III to all have excellent IQ. The differences are more in the feature set, although the 5D MK III does have a advantage at very high ISO's.

I'm still waiting for reviews I trust of the 1D X, its too easy to get fooled by those who just say it looks 2 stops better to them with no actual testing.

This was my exact experience with the 1DM4. The files were "brittle" and would not take much processing, they just fall apart, especially compared with my 1DM3, which has deep files. Colours were always a bit off, reds were very noisy. Lots of chromatic aberration in the dark areas, and noisier than expected. Often files were way too contrasty. I saw the same issues on a friend's 1DM4 files.

My 5DM3 has absolutely "velvety" smooth files at low and high ISOs, extremely fine grain and spectacular colour & exposure. The files can be endlessly pushed and processed, yet still retain excellent detail without drowning in noise. They will readily take noise reduction very well.
