Hey FM'ers, I did a search and couldn't find anything on this topic here on the forums.
Does anyone here use an SD to CF adapter for your 1D? If you do, will a card higher than 2gb (i.e. 4gb SD) read as 2gb by the camera? Does it write ok? I ask because 2gb 133x CF cards are about $10/ea and an SD->CF adapter costs about $15 and 4gb class 10 SD cards can be had for $5.50. Also, the SD format is used almost universally and readily available these days. Bonus is I can use extra cards in my point-and-shoot and other SD based devices. Am I thinking too hard about this?
I happen to not like SD cards, so I would go with CF all the way. I suggest you try an adapter and a SD card to see if it works. And it may depend on the specific adapter you use as to if it works. Then if it works, there is nothing wrong with using a mixture of card types. You might look for a good deal on some used CF cards to keep the price per GB down.
And remember that with the low sensor size of the 1D, you get a fair number of shots on 2GB. I also seem to remember that the camera does not show the right quanity of shots available for a 2GB card, but still allows you to fill the card when you actually shoot.
Also, if you can find your way to a Canon 1D II camera, you will significantly increase your sensor resolution, and also be able to use either type of card.
I was told that a 2gb CF card would hold around 200-250 shots. I think I may just buy a couple cf cards to dedicate to this camera and keep my idea and the thoughts of a 1DII in the back of my mind. Thanks for the advice Roland.
