p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · mirror lock up.. a deal breaker?

So I sold my 1Ds and now am awaiting for the right F5 to come along. The F100 has been recommended, but the lack of MLU has me on the fence about it.

I can get one at a great price, but I am not sure about it due to the omission of MLU. Also, is the F100 as durable as the EOS-3? I used MLU on like 96% of my shots, as I shoot primarily landscapes (see website for examples).

Thanks for any advice!

If you use any feature 96% of the time, I'd say that becomes a deal breaker.

I just used it out of habit.

I don't think I'd consider buying a camera without MLU if I shot on a tripod 96% of the time.

And had a very solid tripod. And didn't do any nightscapes.

Dustin I really like your work (great website)! That said it sounds like you are going to 35mm film.
I wouldn't recommend that for your type of work. If you choose film for landscapes probably better to go medium format or large format. Why not move to the 1dsm2 or 5d2?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I looked at MF, but it is too much for me at the time - especially since I shoot UWA all the time.

Having owned both the EOS 3 and the F100, I'd rate the F100 as better built and arguably more durable, but the battery grips for the EOS 3 are a lot more durable than the F100's plastic MB-15 grip.

The F100 has a well damped mirror, but if you shoot a lot around 1/8-1/30 you might want to go with the F5 instead, that's the weak spot for most non-MLU cameras including the F100.

And I wouldn't consider any 135 format film camera if I shot on a tripod 96% of the time. What's the point? I only use such cameras because they are small (which neither the F100 or the F5 is), but on a tripod I would choose a smallish 6x4.5 or 6x6 camera instead.

Umm.. how about cost savings? Isn't MF about five to seven times more expensive than 135 - which IMO is already quite expensive.

No?

The cameras aren't much more expensive (depending on what you choose of course) and film cost is probably not very important if you're taking your time with a tripod anyway and mostly shoot landscapes. Just skip the bad frames.

Biggest problem with medium format is they are a dead end system if you choose to go to digital in the future. The beauty of 35mm is you can share lenses between the film camera and the digital camera.

I think if I was so addicted to having/using MLU I would go for a Nex 7 or other without a mirror.

I wouldn't go from full frame to 4/3 .

A guy who coincidentally bought my backpack locally has an almost brand new F100 he would sell me for a pretty great deal (like $150 with grip). I can always try it out, and if I find the lack of mirror lock up is causing problems, I can always sell it for what I paid and go from there. I can deal with a timer if I have to...

Thanks for all the help.

I would love to go MF, but a wide angle lens (35mm) is kinda expensive. My only lens is a 17mm Tokina manual lens..

There is a guy selling an almost brand new F5 with the MF-28 back, an APO Sigma lens and some Nikon lens (24-85?) for $825. If I can finally get a hold of him, I will def. go that route and sell the extras individually.. could get an F5 in EXC condition for maybe $200 or so..

Dustin if cost is an issue I can't see how moving to film is going to save you money. First there is the cost of film and processing. Then you will need a scanner or to get the best out of it a drum scan which isn't cheap.
After using film for twenty seven years at the Wisconsin Crime Lab where I shot medium format at crime scenes because 35mm was not deemed adequate to show the kind of detail needed for large court prints, I just can't see going there for landscapes.
When I used film for my own work mostly landscapes I shot 4x5 and 8x10.
Personally I'd rather shoot my E-PL1 over 35mm film. Just my 2cents
Love the work you were doing with the 1DS!

Thanks!

It is more of a personal growth project than anything. I just want to see what I can do with film. Believe me, I know the costs associated with such an endeavor. A local lab does superb work and scans. Obviously I won't be haphazardly just shooting.. I am looking at buying some bulk film for some trips this summer.

And you can do the same with MF if you choose your system wisely. As long as you buy a system SLR from a currently active maker (Hasselblad, PhaseOne/Mamiya, Pentax) or a Contax 645 you can easily use your lenses on digital. In fact if you pick the right Mamiya or V-Series body or bo Contax you can just add a digital back to the mix, and these days you can get 22MP backs for the price of a high-end FF body.
