Honestly, I still feel OK with the older 1.8D on D800. Here is one with 1.8D's signature busy bokeh at wide open for comparison. One reason I am still keeping it is that I can manually hold it just in the font of the mount and use it as my ghetto tilt/shift 85mm lens.
Just one question though. I own the 85mm 1.4G and recently got the 50mm 1.8G as a small walk around lens. I have been so impressed by the 50 1.8 that i'v been thinking I may downsize my 85 1.4G to the 85 1.8G.
Do you think i'd be taking a hit on image quality and focus speed? Going by the samples on here it sure looks like the only hit i'd be taking would be the loss of the 1.4!
This is great to hear. I had been looking at getting more of a portrait type prime ever since I let my 60mm Macro 2.8 go. This 85mm had been back ordered everywhere. I finally got it on Amazon the other night and just decided to pull the trigger. Figured I could always return it if needed. Sounds like I won't be returning anything... I will post some pics when I get it tomorrow.
You won't regret it one bit. I let my 60/2.8G go too, but thought to myself, "why did I just do that?" So we re-procured. Never hurts to have lots-o-tools in the box!
