As far as I know this is still the latest release date forecast by Canon (It's in there just that the linking doesn't work well on that site for some reason: they said late May 2012).

B&H are not accepting preorders yet which could be indicative of the kind of faith people have in seeing those lenses in May.

I have tried to obtain some delivery info in a roundabout way, but Canon Canada is maintaining their silence these days.

The bottom line is that nobody seems to know anything, and those that might know something are not talking.

I pray every night Peter, maybe just maybe...then again I keep waiting for my CPS membership so I can actually buy the thing when it does release

Geoff, you should get your membership soon, and then just get 400 II........whether you'd use it bare or with 1.4xTC MkIII, you will be amazed by the performance and quality of the lens.

just sent in a CPS trial request for the 500f4mkI the other day actually =P

if i enjoy hand-holding the lens as much as Peter seems to be able to hand-hold all of lovely long lenses, I may be very very tempted to pick up a 500f4mkII at the end of the summer..

can't wait to see your test shots fellas, hope the lenses arrive soon!

Hey if you can handhold the 500mk1 comfortably then just get the 600II as it weighs the same as the 500 mark I.

That is my reasoning as I'm always looking for more reach anyways but since I can get a 840 f/5.6 out of the 600f/4, I don't see the reason in buying the 800 f/5.6 other than AF acquisition speed. Then again the 7 lbs of the 500 markII is going to make a really handhold-able lens.

Called BH today for an update. No new info. For as long as these lenses have been delayed, Canon owes it to their customers to be frank and upfront. It's really getting old not being able to obtain any information.

can't say i'm crazy about how I feel about how Canon's chosen to approach things past few releases, can only imagine those even more heavily invested might feel even more PO'd

Yup, that's what forecasts do.....

I can understand and accept delays, yet what I find surprising is Canon's apparent ineptness in forecasting, controlling schedules and communicating.

It was as recently as the last week in February when we were told by Canon that my 500 II was going to be delivered to me by early April.
Now, we are hounding them for a delivery time update, but no response yet.
I think Canon Canada/USA are as bewildered as we are........I believe it is Canon Japan who are making puppies with this one big time.

Ship? They haven't even officially announced it yet! The 2010 announcement was a "here's something we are working on" announcement. Not sure what is going on internally but its far different from the 200 f/2 and 800 f/5.6. They pre-announced those in October 2007, officially announced them with pricing in January 2008, starting shipping in May 2008 and I bought one (the 800) for 10% less than MAP in November of 2008. Ah the good old days....

The 200-400L was seen testing in Africa when the first photos surfaced of what the 5D III a few months ago. That gave some hope it might be nearing completion and would be announced officially. Also pricing seems to be floating around of ~ $10K

My thoughts are Canon cannot fulfill demand for the 300 II and 400 II for the Olympics so are prioritizing their production. The demand is so great that the 500 II, 600 II and 200-400 are sidelined to after the Olympics.

The impression I get for the 200-400 is that it will be sold nearing 600 II prices.
