Did they charge you shipping when they sent the new plate? Guessing they didn't. Assuming so, what they did sounds completely reasonable to me. You should be paying shipping for a product received. They didn't charge you twice for shipping, right?

If you just returned the product and didn't take a replacement it seems reasonable to me that you would be charged shipping since they were offering to replace the product and you decided you'd rather return it outright.

I didn't get charged any duty on my new rev a shipment. I also didn't get charged shipping and they are paying for my return shipping. So my only shipping charges were for my initial order which seems fair to me. I also didn't get charged tax either on my rev-A so they must have sent proper paperwork for the border. They put 4 big NAFTA stamps on my invoice and it also says recall on the invoice. Seems really right to me. I'm happy.

I figure I will be out $16 or so. When my Rev. A plate comes in I intend to return it since I don't like the design and I have ordered a Kirk plate. The Rev A plate will come with a prepaid label to return the Rev 0 plate, but then I will also need to return the Rev A plate.

I could call them and see if I can ship both with the prepaid label, but I just want to be rid of RRS. If I put both in the same package they will probably not figure out what is going on and I will end up wrestling with them for months to get it straight. So, I'll return the Rev 0 plate and wait a week or so for them to digest that, then send back the Rev A plate as a regular return. Then I can forget about RRS for the rest of my life.

I received the first plate, asked for a replacement, received the replacement and am sending them both back. I really don't see how it's "fair" that I should pay for ANY shipping charges. The design is still flawed and the plates still don't work correctly. Why should I pay for the delivery of shotty work? This is not a matter of returning something due to a change of heart. This is returning defective merchandise.

It's 8 bucks, so it is what it is. Not going to break me, but won't break them either. I can't imagine being on their side of this equation and having my customer pay a penny for something that I knew wasn't right. I've been self-employed for almost my entire adult life and that's simply how I operate.

I also received a rather unsatisfying e-mail from their customer service. You can be assured that this thread is being closely monitored by them. No need to get into all of the details of the email, but the premise of the email is that this is supposedly a good product, RRS stands behind the design, and that the current flaws aren't flaws at all, rather they are specifically chosen design elements. The revision supposedly won't leave a mark, but according to RRS many plates leave marks in bodies (after using at least a dozen various plates and L-plates, that's news to me). It was about 3 paragraphs of this-and-that and no mention whatsoever about my #1 issue about the plate...the fact that the camera still visably points downward with the revision.

RRS has had two chances to bat with this plate. In my opinion they've struck out both in the actual product and in their handling of the issue. I have a lot of their stuff, but I can definitely see myself looking at other options in the future.

Well, that's disappointing to read. However, if they honestly believe their replacement is satisfactory then they have no obligation to cover shipping for something you want to return and I don't blame them for that. Did you send them pictures of the camera with the new plate? All that being said, you have the ultimate say and that's with your wallet and it seems clear you will take your business elsewhere.

Another twist to this plate dilemna. I recieved an email from RRS today concerning my original returned plate. They credited only the cost of the original plate but deducted the initial shipping charges. It is not a full refund. Maybe this is typical policy but considering the poor fit of product that I was shipped and what I have heard about Rev A, it doesn't quite sit well with me. What do you guys think? Or maybe I am overly concerned about $8 or so.

I got them to refund me the cost of the plate and shipping. There was no way I was going to pay shipping on a plate that had to be recalled. It is a matter of principal not the money.

Joshua, FWIW, I haven't refused very many shipments but whenever I did, I don't recall ever being charged shipping especially when the product is admittedly bad.. I am quite certain B&H doesn't do it, I know Amazon doesn't. But every company has their own policies. Be as it may I recieved my PMG universal plate, it works and looks as good as anything out there, and all for $30 all inclusive. And it will not mark the camera. Done deal. I'm glad that you found that item. BTW, I asked Tom Fudala the owner of PMG about the L bracket.

I just got one of their universal plates too. For $30 you can't beat it. It will do fine until the grips come out and I will still be able to use it on the grip.

For all you guys that are not happy with the Rev A plate and sending it back again, is this only with the single plate or are any of you not happy with the L-plate?

If not happy with the L-plate, could you post a photo of where the problem lies because I've looked really closely trying to see the fit between the body and plate and it looks flush and solid to me. The Rev-0 L-plate showed a bit more light/gap and only on one side (meaning it was skewed a bit) but the Rev-A looks good as far as I can tell. I compared to the 5D2 and 7D and they all look about the same.

I just ordered the Kirk L bracket. According to Jeff, it should ship today. I will report how it fits next week when I get the camera and the L bracket.

I expressed my thoughts in a response to their email. we'll see what happens. As you say it's the principal, but also the annoyance of repacking it, getting in the car and taking it to UPS. They should pay me for my trouble.

One of those plates on each camera body and you're set. It IS a nice product that looks good as well. Future proof!

I wonder if there will eventually be a "Rev. B" RRS L-bracket? I'm reluctant to order anything from them now after reading all of these posts.

I really don't want to buy from Kirk, because I've had issues in the past where their plates didn't fit properly either, and their general "fit and finish" has never been quite as good as RRS.

Can one of you guys with the Kirk L-Bracket post pics of it? It would be interesting to see a comparison of the design philosophy...

Thanks!

Future proof, that's the word ! Although I use the regular plate more so than an L-bracket, I still would like to get an L-bracket for my camera. I will wait a few weeks until the dust has settled to figure out which one.

I would love to get your feedback on it. Is this the one specifically for the 5D MK3 or a universal? Again the price is right and since I don't use an L bracket very often it would be nice to have one, when needed, that worked and didn't cost an arm and leg.

Jim,

If I get one I'll post pictures and thoughts. It will be a dedicated 5D3 bracket according to PMG. I don't use one that often either but $100 is easy to justify.

If you order this one, write on the note section to remind them make sure to include the main bolt that screw it into the body. I got mine today and it's missing the big one...crap!

Was looking to use it for the fullmoon this weekend too.

Same here! Luckily I had an extra one on hand from another plate. I contacted them and they are mailing one out.
