Heck...I'm completely surprised that you are so completely surprised. Shortages and limited supplies of the D800 have the lead story for weeks.

Like other folks have mentioned, if you want a D800 ASAP, be prepared to pay the "bend over, grab your ankles and take it like a champ pricing.

I was not in the market until couple weeks ago. I was happy with my D2X, did not care for a new camera until I need a camera to do video.

I guess I will rent a professional camcorder for now and wait for all hoopla of the D800 settle down.

was the same for the d200. i got one of the 1st batch into europe on day1 of release. there were still imposible to get months later and hard to get a year later.

Let's say I put down a deposit. Who should I give it to?

Should I go with giant company like B&H, Amazon.....or mom & pop local stores?

Any suggestion?

Some local mom and pops require a non-refundable deposit to pre-order, if that matters to you at all.
