Hello everyone, I am a first time poster. I am looking for a f2.8 zoom lens for my nikon d5100 Nikon F mount (with AF contacts). I would prefer the 70 to 200mm range. If anyone can offer up some suggestions I would be grateful.
The main problem with that model (D5100) is that you can only use AFS lenses to have AF. You can use oldest AF lenses but only focusing manually. AFS lenses with a F/2.8 in that range are the one that was already mentioned (70-200mm VR) and the other is the AFS 80-200mm. You also have the Nikon AF NIKKOR 80-200mm f/2.8 but you will not have AF since your camera does not support AF in that case.

Another option could be a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon that you can get new for $1200.
whats your price range, your shooting an entry level cam- so my logic says you probably aren't looking for a $1500 70-200 VR I. but as previously stated your options are slimer with an entry level body without a focus motor. the AF ED is impressive and cheaper than the AF-S 80-200 counter part (1100-1200). i sold an AF ED back before one of the price hikes for $575, same lens sold a couple months later for $800-900, but your options with a D5100 sit at the 80-200 AF-S or the 70-200 VR. unless you go third party. (DX equiv Tokina 50-135mm 2.8 is awesome- and would balance on your body perfectly.) only about 500-600 for those. sigma and the rest also sell 70-200 2.8s for cheaper.
That would likely be a good option for the OP to consider. I'm extremely pleased with both my Sigma 85mm f/1.4 and 50-150mm f/2.8 HSMII.
However, unlike Nikon which doesn't announce their product until it's imminently about to ship, Sigma seems to announce their products literally YEARS before you can actually purchase them. If memory serves me right, this was "announced" over a year ago.
If you can't actually buy a lens, then it's worse than even an El Cheapo kit lens.

i strongly suggest the AFS 80-200mm. I use it and it is very sharp. I have not used the 70-200 VR 1 but i hear it is not the best so if you can't get the 70-200 VR2 i suggest the AFS 80-200. You can find it used for around $950.

On DX 70-200 VR I shine fine, The new 70-200 is optimized for FX users. So that's $800 that doesn't need to be spent, 80-200 AFS is a fine lens though...x4
