p.2 #10 · your photography gear journey | |
My first camera was a Canon EOS 300 kit in 2001. I then bought and sold a dozen lenses for it. Let me think... 28-90, 80-200, 24/2.8, 28/2.8, 28/1.8, 50/1.8, 85/1.8, 135/2.8, Tamron 17-35 and 90 plus a few more. Then added a 30E body. My final kit was the 300, 30E, 28/1.8, 50/1.8 and Tamron 90.
Then in 2006 I jumped ship to Nikon and went digital with a D70s. If I remember correctly I've had for that the 18-70, 17-35, 35-70, 70-200VR, 20, 50/1.8, 50/1.4, 105/1.8, 105/2.5, 180, Tamron 90, Sigma 50-150 and maybe a few more unremarkable zooms. Eventually I settled into a kit comprising of a D2H (a superb camera), the D70s, 17-35AFS, 50/1.4 and 105/1.8.
Then in 2010 I bought a Bronica SQB. And after shooting with it for a couple of months I basically dumped all my digital stuff. I then bought a 50/1.8 for my Canon 300 (I kept it, my first camera) to restart with 35mm film. Added but then sold a 28/1.8, 24-105L, Tamron 28-75 and EOS 3.
I then replaced the Bronica with a Hasselblad 501. I briefly added a Bronica ETRS to try the 645 system but didn't like it.
So, my current kit is:
501CM, 50CT, 80CB, 150CF, 250CT
EOS 300, 1V, 20/2.8, 50/1.8, 100/2
and a recently acquired Olympus OM-1 with a 50/1.8 (brilliant little camera)
The plan is to eventually replace the 50/1.8 with a 50/1.4 II (when they make it) and to add a 553ELX/555ELD to my Hasselblad kit but that's about it. I don't feel the need for other focal lengths and I do have the best cameras money can buy in their categories so that's it, for the first time I'm really happy with the kit and don't feel adding to it. If I win the lottery I'll get a CFV50 back for the Hasselblad.
Of all the above, the only new gear I bought was the EOS 300 kit, D70s, Canon and Nikon 50/1.8 and Canon 100/2. Everything else was bought used and mostly sold at a 5-15% loss. The only exceptions are the Nikon 180 which I killed for about £180 (bought for £280 I think) but the 17-35AFS I had made a nice £300 profit. The 105/1.8 also made me £200. The advantage of buying FF lenses pre-D3 and selling post-D3!!! Crazy.
