(one note, it seems like you favor 'main' ISOs + 1/3 stop, but those tend to have less dynamic range and more shadow noise than both 1/3 stop below or above.)

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding -- all my shots are -1/3 EC ... as in minus, not plus. (Although toward the end of the thread, I'm reading recommendations to go to +1/3 for high-ISO, indoor shots.

You're quite welcome ... thanks for your observations (which I've chopped in the interests of brevity because I don't have any comments).

Good review of a camera I wont soon be able to afford. I looked at your website too, and what an impressive piece of work. Interesting writing, beautiful photos, and some very interesting experiences you write about and document with photos. An enjoyable read/view on all accounts. Thanks!

Thank you very much for your kind comments. It was nice of you to take the time to look around and tell me.

Looking back, I'm sorry that I went with small images, but it was a long time ago and monitor resolutions weren't what they are now and I wanted the photos to look all right even on low-res monitors. It would be just too much work to go back and enlarge them all -- gotta keep moving forward -- but any new images I add will be larger.

Cheers,
Don

Thanks for the writeup. Being a landscape shooter, I'm not very interested in the high ISO capabilities --- I'm more interested in what the camera can do at low ISO. I'm glad you've included many images at the base ISO. I use to own the 1DsIII, and am use to the kind of 1:1 detail that one can expect from that camera. Based on the jpegs (I can't view the RAW), I don't get anywhere near that feeling. I hope that it's just a jpeg processing thing, but if the RAW files look similar --- I suspect we may

On all my compact cameras, I never went above the lowest ISO, so now that I've just shot off a bunch of samples at 25,600 for people who are interested, I plan to lower that auto-ISO range dramatically. It won't always be ISO100, but it will have to be a shot I can't get any other way to get me to go over ISO1600.

Thanks for your comments.

I'll be in HK in a month or two. How much did you pay for the 5D3? Where would you recommend me to buy it?
Thanks again

It cost HK$27,000 -- right about the list price of US$3,500. Obviously, there's no reason for dealers to offer discounts on a brand-new camera that many people would like to have. I bought mine from Mirama Camera on Stanley Street (near Lyndhurst Terrace) in Central; they've been in business over 30 years. And a friend of mine said he just say the Mark III at a Fortress shop (Fortress and Broadway are the two main chains of electronics products in Hong Kong), so they're going mainstream by the sound of it -- they were charging $27,800 ... about US$100 more, or about US$3,600. On the bright side, I think they offer interest-free installment payments.

Hard to say if I would recommend it for you. I don't know what you have or what you want to shoot, but I moved up through Canon compacts to the 5D a couple of years ago ...and I am very pleased with the upgrade. Owners of the Mark II will have a bit more difficult deciding.

Thanks again Don, how does sharpness look using the mkIII compared to other bodys.

I can only compare it to my Canon 5D ... and it's looks fine.

Weird--I'm always at +1/3 with all Canon cameras I've used.

Anyway, again thanks a ton for doing all this! There's precious little real life 5DIII shots to chew on right now and you're giving us the bulk of it. Looking forward to your next batch of shots.

Thanks for the comment about +1/3. Sounds like I want to question that old habit of mine.

You're quite welcome for the shots.

Thanks to everyone for your kind comments. Happy to help with a few photos, especially after all the information I've learned over the years on this forum -- mainly about lenses, so special thanks to anyone who reviewed a lens ... I think I've read them all.

And thanks to several of you for suggesting that I start experimenting with exposure compensation on the plus size of zero.

Now that I've posted a few shots, the inertial ball is rolling, so I will post a few more as I find the time. I'll let you know when I do.

Cheers,
Don

What he means is not your EC setting but that you are using a lot of ISO values that are +1/3 up off of the main values. So instead of ISO 800 using ISO1000. Instead of 1600 it would be 2000. I'm not read up on the actual issue so can't explain why but I have read about this before. Basically it was determined that it is best to shoot at the -1/3 values (also known as +2/3 values). These would be like ISO 640, ISO 1250, ISO 2500 etc..

I'm not really "guessing" on the battery warranty thing, but do whatever you want. I wouldn't do it on my cameras at least until the warranty had expired. Sounds like you'll be prepared for a LOT of shooting with 6 batteries-about 6000 shots without recharging!

Didn't mean to sound like I was challenging you ... I wasn't. Just wondered if that was in writing somewhere you'd seen. Sometimes on my travels it's difficult to charge batteries as often as I'd like and I like the peace of mind that having several spares offers. If I'm buying five extras, I don't mind saving a little money.

Here is what the Canon Australia warranty says:
http://www.canon.com.au/Support-Services/Warranty/Warranty-Terms
(excerpts)

5. The warranty does not apply where damage is caused by other factors, including without limitation:
....
(f) use of the Product with other accessories, attachments, product supplies, parts or devices (including batteries, tapes/cards, lenses and flash attachments) that do not conform to Canon Inc specifications;

I read this to mean that if you have a non-Canon battery and a shutter failure, you're covered, but if there is a circuit failure traceable to the battery, the warranty is void. But then, I'm very simplistic, and haven't found anything in writing. Best thing to do is to ask a Canon rep.

Haven't seen any 5D3 raw images that were converted in the latest version of DPP--which I would presume has been optimized for the 5D3. Wasn't a copy of DPP in the box with the 5D3?

There is a screen protector, but like you I prefer to use one of the aftermarket screen protectors because its easier to replace if it gets damaged.

The new GGS glass screen LCD protectors are cheap and very nice.

No - DPP hasn't got the updated version in their latest CD that was included with the 5D Mk. 3, or it wasn't in my box. Haven't been able to see or process my raw images so far. I'm forced to shoot using jpegs for the moment. A little annoying especially when I have a trip to shoot images in Tasmania next week and I wanted to try out a new lens or two before going. BUT I love the 25,600 ISO..its great!

yeah - you couldn't download DPP as of last night either. There's a military term that begins with "cluster" and rhymes with firetruck that applies in this situation
