Cool bridge with a great backdrop of the Chicago skyline. Welcome to the Weekly Assignment. You have a solid first entry. If you would like some C&C:
1. Image is slightly tilted to the right - it's easiest to level the waterline because some of the buildings are not going to line up with the edges of the frame due to optical distortion. You can check the lines closest to the center of the image to reduce the effects of optical distorion when leveling.
2. The sun is shining on the buildings in the background and I wonder if there is a time of day where sunlight might highlight the bridge itself because the bridge structure gets a little lost amongst all the lines of the buildings in the BG.
3. The tree on the left is a little distracting, and a closer crop may be more compelling even though it might not show the entire bridge. Focusing on the raised portion of the bridge from a closer vantage point might provide an opportunity to seperate the bridge structure more from the BG.
4. I also wonder what this bridge would look like at night with all the city lights?
5. It's a very cool looking bridge and I think the main problem is how to feature and highlight the bridge most effectively within the image.
6. If you don't re-shoot then you could use a vignette on this image within photoshop to lighten and fade the bridge so that it pops out from the BG....Show more →
Mark, thanks for the feedback! I had a very limited time to shoot the photo before the sun set, and unfortunately I won't have time to reshoot. I was torn between leveling the river and lining up the Sears Tower with the right side of the frame. I tried it both ways and the river being slightly off is WAY less distracting than a leaning Sears Tower. I'm going to play with it in Photoshop a bit more and see what I can do to make the bridge "pop".
Thanks again for the input. I think these contests and feedback will really improve my skills.
