Thanks for the critique, and your analysis, McGrattan. Culling images is agonizing, but you have to be ruthless. This image is not cropped at all, except in how I framed it while shooting. Personally, I find shooting beautiful sunsets, women, and flowers not very challenging. They all are beautiful, and almost any photo or treatment is going to be beautiful too - unless you screw up. I need to have a vision, or goal when shooting topics such as these. In this shot I came close to my goals...a limited dof with creamy bokeh...light and shadow that have a broad dynamic range, and to capture the iridescence of the individual petals. The thing that made this image better than the other 25 keepers I shot was the way it fit within the rule of thirds. I just felt it was the strongest in all the categories of my goals. However, I had other flowers I shot that I felt were at least as visually compelling, but just didn't meet my vision as well. Today, three flowers I bought as buds opened...which spurred another 250 shots. I probably am done shooting flowers for a while....

I enjoy the pure white mum as opposed to the dyed ones my florist had.
I really like how the opposing corners represent the brightest and darkest points in the picture. For close-ups like this I find that selecting a crop is agonizing, how did you decide where to crop?
