Remember the old Miller lite commercials where the guys were shouting at each other... "Great taste!" vs. "Less filling!" We have our own version here with "More Megapixels" vs. "Higher ISO and faster AF" Same old song that was playing when the 5D Mark II hit the market vs. the D700 and for me, the D700 (and higher ISO with much better AF) won. Now Nikon is competing against itself, they have sacrificed better high ISO IQ for MP, same thing Canon was doing a few years ago, if the Canon 5D Mark III comes out at 18-20MP but with superb high ISO and better AF, that's going to make things really interesting.

And on top of that, Canon's rebuke to the D800 was to announce a $2300 24-70 replacement with no IS that won't be avail until summer!
Oh my gosh, are you kidding me! $2300 and no IS, well that goes right along with their 1D X pricing. Canon boys, if you aren't thinking of switching to Nikon now... well, I understand, it took me a while too.
The Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8G was one of the first lenses I bought and compared to the Canon 24-70 f/2.8L and after a couple shots I knew the Canon 24-70 would not be used very much at all; the Nikon was that much better!
And it has an 82mm filter thread to boot, so guess what, time to upgrade all your expensive B+W MRC and Heliopan SH-PMC filters... ChaCHING!

Ha ha ha. They're all so cheesed off and feeling sorry for themselves. I find it odd that they're all trying so hard to defend Canon. Makes no sense to me. I'm an ex Canon user but if Nikon were way behind the game and Canon were releasing the better tech and had a clearly superior product lineup I would just switch or get on with it rather than spend my time talking about how great Canon was. The Canon board is regularly filled with Nikon discussion....

I don't see much hand-wringing or second-guessing over there. By and large they seem pretty content and secure. We all see what we want to see, i guess.

30 and trolling like most 16 year olds would. Well, at least ya keeping up with the ages.
I know! It's awful sn't it. The frustrating thing was that I started a legitimate thread on the Canon board, looking for legit discussion. The first response was 'yawn'.
With 30 years under your belt OP, you still appear to be lacking maturity and wisdom.
Carrying on with "my camera is better than your's" doesn't count for much in photography. Your thread and the way in which some are going on doesn't reflect well on you guys.
Bottom line, you can thank Canon's competition for the wonderful D800, and for it's price point. As a Canon shooter, I'm happy Nikon stepped up and hit a home run. It means Canon will be pressured to produce a better and cheaper camera for us. If Nikon dropped the ball, I'd be bad day for Canon shooters.

I generally ignore the chatter about new products and like Mihai discounted the D800 when it was rumored to be 36 megapixels. I was content with my D700 and the kit of MF glass I'd built over the last couple of years. But the D800 really does appear to be a very spectacular camera, so it is hard to step aside as everyone shares their enthusiasm, or as in this thread, muses about how it affects current users of the D700. I read the long Canon thread and the usual celebration of Canon glass that makes moving to Nikon impossible. I also read the lament about Canon's failure to produce a prosumer camera with decent focusing, which is a sensible response. I say that as a transplant who moved from the 5D to the D700.
I placed my order this morning and will wait patiently with the thousands of others who've decided the D800 is simply too enticing to ignore. I'll pay for it with the last of the money I liberated by liquidating my Canon kit that included an abundance of professional lenses. So my Canon gear financed my Nikon kit. I've no complaint....Show more →
Haha, way to go! I am seriously thinking about getting the D800 next year, but I can afford to assess my needs at a later date since I have recently acquired the D3s. I look forward to hearing your input, since we both gave up on the Canon for the D700.

Things went downhill from then on.
Actually, coming from a person whose profile is loaded with Nikon gear, that would rightly be called trolling. It is not much appreciated on the Nikon board either. And, for the record, chronological age is not necessarily correlated with emotional maturity. Happy birthday regardless...
I'm damn near 35 years old and don't think that the OP's posting was immature. He was just starting a discussion about how the Canon folks were handling the issue.
Imagine how this world would be with NO discussion.
Edit: Posting a link like that is simply to help users know where the info was coming from. Without it would have resulted in a bunch of "which thread are you talking about" posts.

Had I been able to handle or afford the D3s I wouldn't likely have made this purchase. The form factor of the D800 works for me. It actually is a few ounces lighter than the D700, so I'm smiling at that. Check out the Manual Focus Nikon Glass thread in a few weeks you may find some observations. I'll likely also chime in to a more general thread with observations about how MF glass does with the large sensor. I'm curious myself.
