If the field performance of this lens is as impressive as what Canon marketing wants us to believe, then Canon is really the king of the hill. So far, the Nikon and Zeiss equivalents are hardly impressive
Oh, and those snobs and fanboys who claim that Canon cannot design high quality wide to normal lenses can go eat some crow.
Waiting for some reliable reviews... DPReview? Photozone? the-digital-picture?
The Nikon 14-24mm is a masterpiece but IMO Canon has better lens designs overall. In nearly every case where the two companies share the same generation of a given lens design, Canon has produced the better design/optical formula. From personal experience this includes the 18-55mm EF-S f/2.8, the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II, and the 300mm f/2.8 Mark I. I would love if I could mount Canon lenses on a Nikon body.

Wowsers!
The drop in tangential MTF relative to sagittal even stopped down suggests quite a bit of lateral CA though.
And +1000000 to Fred, we need a high MP camera to attach to it.
Yes, but first look at the relative drops for the old 24-70! or even the 24 1.4 II or the new 24 2.8 IS or even the 70-200 2.8 IS II.... not so wowsers anymore is it
Plus not all of the difference is necessarily from CA, look at the 70-300L plots, it is a bigger drop, if anything at 300mm end and yet the lens shows worse CA at 70mm than at 300mm in reality.

Actually, I think it is now clear there is a new canon high MP count body right around the corner. The 2 most popular zooms have been revamped for a reason beyond just milking us for more money... they can milk us for a sh*tload of money (for a new camera AND new lenses)!

100% agree with that. I can't give up my 16-35 though.

If Canon does end up producing a Nikon D800-equivalent camera, then I can keep all my lenses but the original 24-70 L, grab this lens, use a good tripod, and be happy in spite of not getting the IS I had hoped for.

Ain't gonna happen, eosfun already hinted a big disappointment is around the corner.
yeah, i would be optimistic that canon couldn't be so dumb to make a foolish mistake this time but eosfun makes one think 20D -> 30D excitement
there is a small chance that he is just upset that it won't have standard GPS, social media networking, etc. since he feels that stuff is critical and that it might be good otherwise, i hope....
I would say 32MP, 6fps, AF halfway to 1DX from 7D, if not better but EOSfun does keep putting all these hints about lets not get too excited and there Canon goes again with the marketing incremental upgrades.... and if Canon had a monster ready why not have an announcement within a week to make the D800 talk all go away like that?
Despite EOSfun, I somehow still think 32MP,6fps,1D3-1D4 quality AF, everything but his latest comments I've gathered from everywhere (other than CR) points to this.
We can only hope he didn't really see it (although it sure sounds like he has) or that he really was just getting upset of wifi/gps/social connecting type stuff. For instance he considers the news lenses a major bummer but I though the announcement was actually kinda cool.

If the 5DX/5D III is 75% of the D800 I would be thrilled. I have already pre-ordered the 24-70L II which will go real well with my 70-200L II. Now Canon ... when are you releasing the 14-24L to complete the Zoom Trinity? Better do it sooner rather than later if you don't want to see an erosion of your market share.

I highly doubt he was referring the big disappointment to non essential feature like social networking, GPS and other stuff that he mentioned afterward. We already have smartphone for that kind of duty, it would be lame for Canon to implement them onto prosumer DSLR, may make sense on Rebel where the regular aunty Betty and uncle Joe may fall for that sort of gimmicks..

"the new zoom hitting fantastic levels of image quality and being very noticeably better than the current version. "
It had better be, considering it's more than twice the price of the old 24-70. (I paid I think $950 for that new, with rebate, a couple years ago...)
I think over the years Canon has suffered from MTF inflation. Their MTFs have always been calculated, but I think the calculation method has changed over time, and comparing them to MTFs from the past may not be a 1:1 comparison. LIkely the change in calculation method has not necessarily been to improve the method of calculation but probably to improve how the results look.
the new primes look nice but it will be interesting to see how they stack up in real-world comparisons to great (and much less expensive) legacy glass like OM 24/2.8, various 28/2s (Hollywood, OM, etc.) and others.

Ed, do you have any evidence to back this up. Evidence in the sense that has produced a lens with an MTF chart indicating better performance than an older lens but showing no difference in the real world?
Counter examples to you assertion include the 70-200 II, 16-35 II, 24 f/1.4 II, 24 TS-E II. All of these lenses had MTF curves from Canon show superior performance to their predecessors and all of these lenses demonstrate superior performance in real world use.

I never really looked at or cared to understand the MTF charts, but I'm interested in the new lens and the charts are impressive.
Besides the CA issue with the 70-300L, do any previous MTF charts by Canon grossly misrepresent the actual real world lens performance. Just wondering if the MTF charts are really as bad (ie: poor indicators) as some say or are they good indicators of actual performance?
