No. The D800 is a pro body. Just like the F4, F6, D700, D300, EOS 1V, etc... Pro bodies do NOT have to have a grip.
Bodies with a grip are a gripped body. There is nothing that says a body has to have a built in vertical grip to be built to professional tool specifications.
The idea that a body has to have a grip to be a 'pro' body is a pet peeve of mine. Nothing personal.

+1
I can see wanting battery and exact interface compatibility with a D4.
Even then I'd be there's a higher number of studio, portrait, fashion, etc... photographers that are perfectly happy with a $3k body that has great features versus an $8K camera that's the pinnacle of what Nikon can do at the time.
It may just no longer be cost effective for Nikon to develop such a beast. I mean look at the last several generations giant leaps in terms of IQ. The D3 was a revelation, the D3x was class leading, it's ostensibly been outdone by a $3k body in just under 3 years.
So, to get completely out of the box... D4X with a square sensor to use the complete image circle.
Why does it HAVE to keep the same aspect ratio. That might differentiate it enough from the D800 to be worth the extra cost.
I too can't really fathom what you guys are looking for in a D4x.
There is no evidence that the D800 is sealed or built any worse than the D4, or any other top-end pro body. AF module, viewfinder, etc. are all the same as the D4. If you read the marketing language of the D800 and the D4, they are word for word identical with regards to build and sealing.
It seems doubtful that you will get speed gains in a D4x. Judging by the fact that a gripped D800 doesn't shoot any faster in FX mode, it seems like processing power is the limiting factor for the D800, not battery power. They'll have to upgrade the expeed engine in order to get any more speed. The only sense I can make here is that maybe in a gripped body they can install dual Expeeds.
But other than that, what really are you looking to gain? Are you willing to pay more than double just to get a shutter rated for 2x the life? Assuming the shutter functions exactly as rated and dies on the 200,001th shot, you could buy two D800s and use them both up and still come out ahead vs. a $7000 or $8000 D4x that dies on the 400,001th shot.
Unless you intentionally like the bigger size/weight, again is that worth more than double for you?

Jammy, I hate to piss on your parade mate!
There will be a D4x.
Nikon needs a new flagship camera and it won't be the D800.
As I said before, there are thousands of shooters like me that don't blink buying a $8000 D4x
Time will tell and if I'm wrong so be it!
Aah, no, there's not thousands. There's a few.
There's a bucket load more who've been telling us that what they want is a smaller body, high MP camera that is the priced more like th 5D.
Nikon may release a D4x. The good news for you is they potentially might price it the same as the D4. That at least be something.

3 of the photographers in the studio here all supplied with D3x asked for the D800/E as next upgrade and not D4 due to its weight and size.
Personally, I have had 2 d3x bodies (sold one already), and while I really enjoy the gripped body, I'm sick of carrying it for miles on end though the woods or worse - on backpacking trips (it's surprising how much space it eats up in my pack). If a D4x does come out, it would really have to be something special for me to be interested (45+MP, fast FPS, huge buffer, etc, etc)
I agree the d4x will be in 12-18 months and built like a tank for extreme use and abuse. The D800 will keep the pros ahppy till then and they will add it to their d3x. We should seee a price drop on the d3x and the 1ds III
a D4x is pointless without significantly more megapixels than the D800. if it is uprated physical performance but the same number of megapixels, i think it's got negligible market. i wouldn't get one unless it had a lot more megapixels than the D800. i've seen some analysis and i think that too many more megapixels and unless there is some significant change in sensor well efficiency, the noise is going to be too much.
