p.1 #1 · Shoulda checked the weather...

Having rained about 20mins before the family arrived I wasnt sure how this was going to work out and was totally embarrassed about not giving them possible notice of a raincheck the day before. We decided to take a stab at it and follow up with another session on a confirmed picture perfect day. I managed to massage some life into what were otherwise very flat, gloomy photos and hope you enjoy them. This is only my second time shooting children and man its not getting any easier lol. All things considered I still had a great time, learned I could work with the worst of weather and am surely looking forward to shooting them again. C&C welcome and appreciated

All shot with 5D, 35L and 135L using natural light.

I think these are very good. I am surprised you didn't get the parents in frame on the last one. That would have been a sure sell.

Dude - I think you did a great job! Love the colors and exposure throughout. # 1 is just hilarious. Really solid throughout - the only thing missing is a few of the three of them together. If you had some of those, you wouldn't need to do a reshoot at all. Great job!

#1 (right) is an opportunity shot that you can't create. Well done to catch it.

Next, #4 is the best swing shot of the bunch. Why? She's larger in the frame, yet we still see she's on the swing. Nice clean background too.

#3 - I like it. Crop some off the bottom.

#6 - Nice as this is, those two thumbs are an issue.

#8. - Nice - Crop some of that sky off the top.

#10 She's nice and clear, but the post is the prominent object in the frame.

Nice shoot. Waiting for more.

I actually liked these alot, I felt like you captured alot of her expressions and I know the parents will be very happy to see them.

A nice shot of all 3 of them would definitely be nice though, but keep up the awesome work.

Really like this set. #1 is such a killer shot. Love #10, too.

Was mom really camera shy? I see dad made into a few, but mom appears to be missing.

Good variety and exposure. Nice shooting. Creative.

The watermark is too prominent for my taste, but I suppose this
wouldn't be relevant to your clients. Still, for forum posts it does detract
from your good work, I feel.

Thanks for posting,
Tim

keckman- 20 posts in 8 years and u post here....I am truly honored. Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to comment on my work. I am glad you like it. I do have them in the frame however it was really really windy and mommy's hair was being blown all over the place. Being that the shot was more about the baby I decided to close in on her with the crop. I will get them all in the reshoot.

benee - thanks for the kind words, I really enjoy your FPJ work and it means a lot to me coming from you. I know what you mean about the family shot...i snapped a few but it was just too windy and I knew mommy was concerned about her hair so I just omitted those for now. Ill get them on the next shoot. Glad you like them!

Jim - I always appreciate the in depth critique you give on all threads you comment on, whether mine or not. You are an asset to the community! Thanks for pointing out those things, the one thing I am not so clear on are the thumbs. I actually thought i caught just enough to show that she was in some sort of cavern looking out...without the thumbs I thought I lost that. Can you elaborate more on why it doesnt work so I can understand and not make that mistake again...I could always crop it

vawill84 - ...i know...i gotta get the family portrait next time and will for sure share with you guys again. I spoked to daddy who seemed to like them, looking forward to hearing what mommy has to say about them so i can incorporate into the next session. thanks for looking, glad you like them!

RianFlynn + coresare - She is ADORABLE....certainly made the gloomy day easier to deal with.

innovis - thank you kind sir, I like how that sounds! I appreciate your vote of confidence!

neighbourboy - She wasn't really camera shy, the wind just wasn't playing nicely with her hair which was in her face or blowing in someone's face half the time. Real bummer with the weather but still happy i walked away with some usable shots. Number 1 was my favorite too, Im really glad you like them, I certainly enjoy your FPJ work!

trumpet_guy - I knew it!! I usually make it very small and about 30%-50% transparent but wanted to try and mimic what I had seen elsewhere with a very stark watermark that I liked....i think it was HOFFER...what do you recommend I do to minimize its draw? Just take them out?

fixedgearmike - thanks Mike, its my favorite too!

Thanks to all for the positive response, I am also surprised based on crappy the day was. This is a good moral booster!

I know, I was so caught up in chasing the baby that I neglected it and every time we stopped to take a group portrait the wind curiously picked up and sent hair every where. We'll get it next time

In addition to some really sweet photos of this cute little girl, you caught the flavor of the day. I can see the family looking through these photos years from now, looking at groups like #2 and saying: "Yes, you remember the weather that day? It was crazy!" as they laugh and warmly remember the experience.

I sure hope so! I was a little discouraged at first but was pleasantly surprised after getting them on a bigger LCD and giving them my usual attention in LR.

thanks for stopping by!

Showing a part of the hand looks like a mistake in the framing dept. I'd look for the whole hand in the frame on each side or a crop without any of the hand, only if that looked good.

Thanks for the nice words.

The lighting is superb. Some would pray for lighting like that for the soft and flat light. And how it moves so nicely into the faces. It isn't often one gets that kind of outdoor lighting that illuminates the face of a child like these do. You could vary the contrast so easily with these. Truly fortunate timing. The wind, bokeh and softness are perfect for a child. Don't tell the parents these are not good photos. They are just about perfect. Like 04. You would need lights to fill like that. And the muted intense color in the BG really pop the child. Kudos.
