I would be very disappointed if the 5D3 only had an 18 mpx sensor. Mind you if it did that would make it much easier for me to keep my 5D2 if it were to remain the highest res Canon body!

Wasn't that the most heard response at the intro of the 1Dx as well? Many here wanted better pixels, not more pixels per se. I am amongst those who want more and better but I would welcome just more of the same current pixelquality too. But Canon's philosphy seems to be more oriented on improving high ISO performance and dynamic range.

I will be surprised if its 8fps.

What incentive do I have to buy a pair of 1div's, if I can get almost all of one, for half cost?

If it has dual slots, 18mp, 8fps, and great af,
I may buy two of them.

The same could be said of the Nikon D700 vs D3

I do landscape and architecture and would like more resolution, BUT if this delivers super clean high ISO and more DR and 7D style AF, then I would strongly consider this, 3MP reduction does not bother me that much if the IQ is there.

I guess some people have yet to realize how successful the D3/D700 lines were, and here's your answer Robert - "the D700 has as much as 95% of the goodness of the D3 in a camera that costs some $2,000 less." Yes it was 8fps with the grip too - camera going on 4yrs old.

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/d700.shtml

The D3 was a lot more money for a small performance gain yet people bought them regardless of how much the D700 was, and they sold a ton of D700 too. Nikon had huge success with this model and many Canon users made the switch.

If you wanted a pair of 1DIV's you would own them right? But if you can't afford them, you'd buy the next affordable body that's closest in performance and Canon gets a sale instead of someone sitting on the sidelines trying to save $$, or possibly going to another brand. So it's a win win. Again, people who are going to buy 1DIV's are going to buy them no matter what what because they want the flagship....they don't care about cheaper bodies with similar performance (think luxury cars too). And if one decides to buy one for a backup to a 1DX, even better. Canon doesn't make all their money on their flagships, so it makes sense to sell higher quantities of the lower end.

Yes, forgot to sum it up in the specs above, but from what was told to me: it does have two card slots. The icon in the top LCD of the safari photos seem to confirm this. If you look closely you can see the icon for card selected.

To me, the 5D crowd cares about pixel quality and resolution.

Grant, you already moved on though... . So, it doesn't matter much, if any, to you.

I didn't buy 1D3's because I wanted to spend an assload of money on a camera. I bought 1D3's because they gave me the functionality I needed to do my work. That is workable ISO throughout, *at the time* good MP, fast FPS, dual card slots, and robust build (for those wondering, I still have Canon 7Ds as well).

If I could do the work I do with a pair of 5D originals, or whatever, I would.

I buy what I need to do the jobs at hand.

FF/1.3/1.6 is really of no consequence to me. With 1.6, I need wider than 24 some times. With 1.0, I don't need a 16-35.

What matters to me is, in I guess this order.

Exceptional IQ
Workable high ISO
fast frame rate (8-10)
AF on the 1D/7D lines
dual card slots
more MP than I get out of my 1D3 (16 would be great, 18 better).
robust build

flash commander doesn't hurt either, but I don't care really.

If a new 5D gives me those, guess what, I'll be scratching 1DIV's from the list. Not a problem

Oh, and news to me about the 8fps. Had FX sensors been important to me around then, I may have switched camera brands then. However, I didn't really care, you know?

One can justify 18MP for the 1D-X, as the "price" to pay for very high fps and ultra low noise. That makes sports and wildlife shooters more than happy. BUT, if Canon maxes out at 18Mp and Nikon does come out with its 36Mp FF DSLR, and Sony as well, since it will be a Sony sensor, then Canon can kiss landscape photographers bye-bye. I don't see that happening, nowhere close. So if this is indeed 18Mp, then there will be another cam with higher resolution. After all, in 2011 Canon had 4 bodies in production: 1D, 1Ds, 5D, 7D. So now they will go down to 3 IMHO, with one of them high resolution.

But you didn't spend an assload on the 1D3's, you bought them used for half of what they originally sold for. So you just answered your own question about your incentive to buy 1DIV when there are cheaper cameras available with similar performance. If you were in the 1DIV market you would pay the premium for the small performance gain, but you're not in that market so you're not affecting sales.

Just to make it clear: this 5Dx is by far not as fast a 1DiV leave alone the 1Dx. Not only is the frame rate slower, but the viewfinder blackout time and shutterlag are behind as well. So let's not dream too much about one body that replaces all 1D cameras at once . This camera will fit perfectly in between the rest of Canon's product line. Compared to the 1D series this 5D is also full frame and high quality image resolution, but slower, more compact, and less than half the price of the 1Dx.

It's the top high res models standing out of the performance of the competition that disappear. Or is it the competition coming closer and closer after the first decade of D-SLR and a very dominant position for Canon's 1Ds and 5D series as the quality leaders at an affordable price for (almost) everyone?
