I think I saw some others that use www.wix.com. That is what I used as well. Very simple and easy to learn. Completely browser based editing. They have flash or HTML5 available with many templates. I started with one close to what I wanted and then did a a lot of customization from there.
I coded my website myself, it's responsive (means: works fine on smartphones and tablets). It runs on Wordpress.
I'm a web designer recently turned photographer. On my web design site there is also a photography section. Of note are the Flickr/Google+ style gallery slideshows. I might transfer this style of gallery to my photography site at this point.
On the webdesign site, the images are hosted on Amazon web services (S3). The itself hosted on a shared server by a local hosting company. Smartphones will load smaller versions of the images so if you are on EDGE or slow 3G you will still have a relatively speedy experience.

For the money, you can't beat it. Even if you're a webdesigner, you might prefer it over designing for hours and hours. :-)
Anything non-flash site will beat it on mobile devices (and even desktops/laptops in some respects). Flash on a website is not recommended, serving up all your content in flash is recipe for failure.
After many years of a fully flash based website, I released this month a much better, using Wordpress and the inFocus theme. There are a few things I want different, but I like it at this moment. Hosting from a local provider.
Using A Photo Folio's Design X. Use Google for mail and domain management, GoDaddy for registration. I used to have a customized Movable Type CMS site hosted on Media Temple, it was very popular for six years, lots of traffic. Can't say much positive about MT's security or uptime but this happened to me twice in past when well regarded hosts became mediocre.
If you ever do get a professional hosting account don't go giving your friends and family free hosting like I did. It didn't cost me anything but the hassles of switching were a huge pain.
I have a couple using prophoto theme on Wordpress. I know Prophoto is widely used, but honestly, I just really appreciate how easy it makes various customizations. I'm also a big fan of Wordpress as a base because of the large library of plugins, etc. that are available to us.
I use photodeck, it is owned by a photographer and allows you to sell your own stock photography. When It starts using picturengine I am going all in. Been busy shooting this year and will be uploading more through the winter.
I have had a MobileMe iweb site, tumblr site, 500px portfolio site, Squarespace site and now I finally found what I was looking for.. with a self hosted WordPress site. I love it. It is definitely more of a pain in the ass to setup. But now that I have finished it I am really pleased with it.
I am still adding content to it and it features my blog.

I use GoDaddy for website domain and email stuff and Photoshelter for site hosting. I keep them separate so that I can move the site if Photoshelter ever changes. I've been with Photoshelter for sometime now, and have noting but great things to say. Very easy to customize, which is important because I don't even know what "code" is, much less do I know how to use it. Too easy to upload, market and see photos...
