Sorry to do it, buy a long lens and the standard point it at the moon shot
I was frankly expecting many more moon shots to show up in this thread. I'm sure I'd be pointing my new 500 at the moon first clear, full I see. Great shot.
Nice diversity of images from everyone and so many examples to aspire to. Thank you all for contributing. Lovely rare moments in the wildlife captures. It just shows that you should always have your 500 with you to capture the moment - just like a P&S.
Stellar interferometry of Polaris (the only star that lets you take an unguided long exposure without trailing). Poked a couple of 5 mm holes 1.5 cm apart in a piece of cardboard and put it in front of the 500 + 2x. Just wanted to see if I could generate interference fringes with temporally incoherent light. (Starting with something as spatially coherent as a star sure helps).
We now return you from the geek channel back to the real photographers...
Just got a 500 about six weeks ago and putting it through the microadjustment trials with wildlife. Alaskan wildlife will be my primary use. Haven't tried it out yet with my 1.4 converter, but have high hopes for the combination.

Romy your link has some AWESOME images, even though they aren't birds. FANTASTIC. That said I think all the submissions so far are really great examples of what photography can be when done by those who know how to use their gear. Expensive gear makes it easier but it still needs to be told how to do it by a real photographer. Being able to buy the "good stuff" doesn't automatically make you a "great" photographer. Hopefully looking at these will drive me to try to improve my skill set somewhat.

I love wildlife shots (including birds, btw) which would be my emphasis when I get one of these lenses. However, I'm finding I'm really enjoying seeing the expressions of some the athletes concentration in the midst of their sport like Lars' windsurfer, or Cocodrillo's poll vaulter, or Romy's surfers (there are some great ones on his site). It takes long glass to get out in the water or field to capture this. Great stuff everyone, thanks!
Thanks, Cicopo and Jeff!
I've seen some excellent astro stuff posted in the thread. Here too are some of my attempts at things in the heavens, using a 500 f4 IS.
Mine is mostly used for wildlife on a monopod. It's a long hike with that one on your shoulder! But I have no regrets. One of my favorite performers with clarity too.
Full framer
Great perspective
almost forgot, moon shots, this the 500+2x teleconverter almost full frame
Excellent new additions! The diversity just keeps coming. Love the wing walker shot with the turbulence curl on the smoke and the SNJ against the moon, great.
EndoRando, your ram looks almost friendly but I'd be glad for 500 mm lens to stay away from those horns! They look like they've seen some use.
Romy, great sunspot shot! Did you use neutral density filters? That looks like it was taken late in the day as some atmospheric distortions are just starting to warp the sun's curvature. The only time I've been able to see sun spots in an image was a 400 mm shot during the San Diego wild fires that thickly filled our sky with smoke and soot.

Sorry about the bird shots a page back, I had a momentary lapse.
'aita pe'ape'a (tahitian), hakuna matata (swahili), no problemo (terminator).
I love bird images, I just knew we'd be flooded with them. Great shots, I can't wait to see a great migration again, especially now with digital cameras.

Thanks Jeff. No filter was used, but the sun was low in the horizon and there was enough haze to allow me to safely stare at it with naked eyes for brief moments.
Dave, that last one of yours with the deer and waterfowl (I admit I can't determine whether they're ducks or geese) is magnificent! Really, really unique.
