Peter, thank you. Every lens serves a purpose. The Ultron 40 is a pancake lens that maintains the low profile even with the hood on. I like it better than the EF 35 F/2, even though I have to turn a ring on the lens to make it focus

Been planning on adding this lens to my growing Cosina/Voigtlander collection since trying one this past year...should have bid a wee bit more on this one> http://www.ebay.com/itm/300628920308?ssPageName=STRK&afsrc=1

Since this is a lens that should be mounted and shot wide open,I was surprised the bokeh wasn't quite as pleasing as hoped at f2...so will have to choose backgrounds carefully wide open...stopped down a wee bit to f4,I was more then surprised at the center resolution....which was amazingly sharp...but a lens like this is meant to be shot wide open.

Okay:

Canon TS-E 17
Zeiss ZE 21 f/2.8
Canon TS-E 24
Canon 24L II
Zeiss ZE 35 f/1.4
Canon 35L
Zeiss ZE 50 f/2.0 MP
Sigma 70mm Macro
Canon 85 1.8
Canon 85L II
Canon 90 TS-E
Zeiss ZE 100 f/2.0
Canon 135L
Canon 185L
Canon 16-35L II
Canon 24-70L
Canon 70-200L f/2.8 IS II
Canon 200L f/2 IS
Pick three super-teles: 300, 400, 600.

All of that is for full frame. A few thoughts on the list: I started with photojournalism before autofocus became available. Manual focus remains easy. The Zeiss lenses are my choices for low light, except at the wide end. There, the Canon 24L II is the supreme all-around low-light-capable photojournalism lens. All other photojournalism is handled by the zooms. Another low light exception is theater and events, which is what the 35L is for. It's also a great choice for kids-running-around stuff and family get-togethers.

The Zeiss lenses at 35, 50, and 100 are my portrait lenses, except the Canon 85 1.8 for toddler pictures (faster autofocus than the 85L), the Canon 135L for candids, and the Canon 200L for soft backgrounds. I prefer the portrait style of the Zeiss lenses to the 85L, so I really don't know why I have the 85L on the list. I don't own it now, but have always wanted a justification to own something so weirdly wonderful. A 20-lens list is a justification, I guess, but it's the first lens that would come off the list if I needed space for something else.

The Canon 300 and 400 join the zooms for sports, the 600 for wildlife. The Zeiss lenses and the TS-E lenses are for landscape and cityscape, and fully cover the range, except at 70mm, which is what the Sigma is for (the zooms are less than great for distortion at that focal length). The TS-E lenses double for architecture, inside and out. The Canon 180 does the full macro duty, but the Zeiss lenses—except the 21—are all strong contenders for extreme close-ups short of full macro, as is the 90 TS-E, a little bit farther out.

The Zeiss lenses get the nod for extreme enlargements, but the TS-Es are great there too, especially for stitching.

A no-restrictions 20-lens list really does fill almost every niche.

One piece that I long for, so far unavailable, is a 70mm TS-E, to replace the Sigma 70 on my list. I like to keep landscape perspectives clustered in the neighborhood between 35mm and 100mm, and a new 70 TS-E from Canon would slot right in there. For that matter, I would also be delighted to have a 70mm no-tricks f/2.0 MP from Zeiss. It puzzles me why the 70mm focal length looms so large among zooms, but gets all-but-ignored for primes.

If you are a lens collector or aspire to become one , here is your chance to shed the shackles of minimalistic gear thoughts and indulge in virtual opulence.

Great question. I would get 20 copies of the 50mm f/1.8. Think of the advantages!

1. Everyone knows that real photographers shoot with 50mm primes and zoom with their feet!

2. I hear that this lens has a wonderful 3-D effect and powerful drawing abilities, not to mention luminous colors and the ability to control diffraction.

3. Since we all know that companies like Canon have abominable quality control, with 20 copies I'll be able to subject them to very careful side by side comparisons (just need to figure out how to connect 19 more monitors to my iMac, but I'm sure that isn't a real problem) and figure out which is the very best 50mm lens among them.

4. When equipment conversations come up, I'll be able to both impress and completely baffle and astound others. First, I will actually own more lenses than anyone else! Second, once I offer my explanations and the arcane and wonderful technicalities that underly them, by theories will seem to bizarre and incomprehensible and downright radical that I'm likely to develop a devoted - though perhaps small - following.

5. Unlike others who might own 20 lenses and be faced with difficult decisions about which among them to choose, I'll be able to quickly and confidently select the best choice from among all of my options. (I also won't have to haul around quite as much stuff.)

6. On those occasions when practicalities prevent me from carrying all twenty of my lenses, my[/] decision about which to bring along and which to leave at home will be simple and clear.

7. The only explanation for my choice will appear to be utter madness or a form of brilliance and out of the box thinking that only a few are capable of. I will maintain that my choice is proof of the latter.

8. It costs a lot less than buying 20 800mm Canon primes.

Dan

I also have that 70 mm problem. For many landscapes I can stitch from a 70-200, but it would be nice to have a single lens when that is not feasible.

Why? 20 copies is not that expensive unless you plan to buy B+W filters for each.

Doesn't matter.....it's your ideal/perfect 20 lens kit.

Oh, those are the rules, better try again:

Current travel kit:
1) 17-40
2) 24-105
3) 100L
4) 100-400
5) G10 (aka cheap travel zoom)

Current family, street, event kit:
6) 35f2
7) 85f1.8
8) 70-200f4IS

Don't really need more than this but since PetKal is footin' the bill,
Extended Granddaughter portrait and school stage kit:
9) 70-200f2.8II
10) 300/2.8II

Extended truck trip landscape and wildlife kit:
11) 17TSE
12) 24TSEII
13) 24f1.4II
14) 45TSE
15) 180L
16) 400/5.6 (BIF)
17) 500/4II
18) 800/5.6

Just for fun:
19) CZ 35f2
20) 135f2

I'd need some supplemental bodies too: 1DIV, 1DX
Then I'd have everything I could possibly want. But wait, what would I lust after? What would I do with the rest of my life, take pictures

dangmitchell [sic] ftw. Perfect choice, except..."a form of brilliance and out of the box thinking that only a few are capable of"? Maybe there is something to John Powers' hunt for a mint 50/1.0 box. Wouldn't it be relatively easy to have 20 boxes for your collection of nifty fifties? Then it would be so much easier to protect the one that outshone all the others in a game of ultimate pixel peep ®TM Mattelica.

All 20 are Canon lenses, and most are currently manufactured and sold. I would have real use for all of them. Those that would be new to me in type (as opposed to just version or details) are the 8-15, the TS lenses, and the longest teles (400, 500).

Note the inclusion of the 85/1.8. I own both of the 85s listed, and like having the 1.8 for its fast AF and compactness.

Solid choices, Jess...... however, I am a bit surprised you haven't listed 400 DO which is usually a common choice by folks who reach certain maturity in years.

You're right. They need the 28-300/3.5-5.6L IS. It's so versatile. Really.

My 'only three' lenses would be Zeiss 21/2.8 ZE, Canon 28-300L IS, and 500/4L IS.

Can I have an Extender?

Actually, Michael, those would be my choices as well although I'd probably have to add 500 f/4 IS MkII.
