So my 4 month old got a little paranoid today...

Luckily, we were able to talk him down. I was practicing for an upcoming newborn shoot and he agreed to model for me... just practicing balancing strobe and ambient...

Good light in both. Cute kid. He doesn't need the hat.

those eyes in the second shot!!! Good choice on the color background you shot against for this practice. Are you using similar background colors for the shoot? I like your lighting as well. I know when I shoot a session when practicing I would try to mimic the environment as much as possible.

I have never shot a baby before but notice from multiple posts from different people that babies seem to absorb surrounding colors much more than adults. Their skin is so pure an smooth color reflection from bibs, bright clothing seems to affect the skin. Just an observation I noticed. Not really in your shots, just passing what I noticed.

Thanks Manny - I'm not sure exactly what I'll have to work with in the background color for the shoot this week. I wasn't shooting against a backdrop or anything, but was able to open up my 85mm lens to blur the background.

My goal for the upcoming shoot is just to use ambient as much as possible. If need be, though, like in the 2nd shot, I can use strobe to give it that little extra umph.

That's a good point you made about babies' skin - I think you're right that since the skin is so light it can tend to pick up ambient colors more easily.

Ha ha, love that expression, matches the hat perfectly. Aren't bumbos the greatest thing ever?

Thanks David - yea, he's just now able to sit up reasonably well in a bumbo. Good times!

JR - glad you like the 2nd one. Thanks for looking!
