An old thread but somewhat comforting to me, I was second shooting a wedding last night and my LCD went out. My D700 has less than 20K actuations on it, I"m the second owner but it is in otherwise good shape. I'm going to run it by my local shop (Strauss in DC) tomorrow but will also consider sending it into Nikon.
I'm concerned that an electrical issue with my 3rd party grip or 3rd party batteries could have been a contributor... am I being paranoid? Here is the sequence of events leading to the LCD dieing...
1. Shot about 600 shots over the course of the wedding and reception, I was using a Zeikos brand MB-D10 grip, one of the batteries was a Nikon one, the other 3rd party (not sure which)
2. While reviewing (and deleting) images on the LCD the screen went out and the top LCD went blank except for a flashing battery symbol (full battery symbol at that)
3. Thinking the grip must have died, I ejected the grip battery and slipped in a new one. ***I did not at this point turn the camera off
4. I inserted a fresh battery into the grip, the LCD immediately went very dark black/blue and slightly wavy. The camera top LCD was normal looking (indicating full MB-D10 battery).
5. I cycled the on-off and nothing happened, several more times and the camera did not shut off.
6. I removed the grip, tried again to turn the camera off, still didn't work.
7. I removed the body battery and inserted a new one... i think you get the picture, bottom line is the LCD never recovered
*oh and right away I removed my CF card terrified that some kind of power surge might have affected it (it did not, it was just fine)
So I'm obviously left with a repair at Nikon or at Strauss, but I'm left wondering about the cause. I've used that Zeikos grip on my D700 and D300 for going on 2 years, same goes for the batteries and never had this issue. I know going with all Nikon accessories is always the preference for reducing risk of issues of course.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
