I'm surprised that so many of you are "surprised" by the quality of these images. You know that Nikon has been doing this a lot longer than most of you....
Here's one from a Coolpix 5700..which has an even smaller sensor...
Something different. Happened by accident earlier today.
Here is a similar scene . Taken with 3 different cameras and 2 shooters.
1) Nikon 1 V1 & AFS 10-100mm PD lens
2) Nikon D3x & AFS 70-200mm/2.8 VR II
3) Nikon D7000 & AFS 70-200mm/2.8 VR I & TC20E III
There should be no doubt that a higher final output size will put the V1 at a disadvantage vs. a D7000 and especially a D3x. But if your typical final size to view, share, and store a photo is 1920x1200, then you can somehow use these 3 images for your viewing pleasure.
I have to say the more user images I see of the V1 and the lenses supplied thus far are winning me over slowly. I have a G3 Panny with a bunch of mft lenses but frankly I haven't seen it do anything this V1 can't. And I've been doing more video clips lately for a group that does dance routines, so it's critical to have good sharpness and color, and the V1 seems to really deliver. The DR is better than I expected to see as well. I typically never print much above 13x19's and on rare occasion a 22x17. So perhaps that might just fit the bill. There is no lack of detail in those above shots with the kit lens. Most impressive.
Others considering the Nikons should make no mistake where the V1, J1 are aimed at. The family camera, the shooter that loves taking lots of photos in easy modes.
The person who enjoys their video too. This camera is better than any video camera.... except for the limitation of video recording length. And it's much smaller than a DSLR if you're using it for that purpose.
I have an Olympus Pen, and love it to death. But I'm waiting for the next generation of the Nikon CX cameras. The P7100 type enthusiast body. Yep!
Andy -- Thanks for the fine shots. Looking forward to seeing any more that you post. Great location for you to be testing out your new toys!
It definitely looks better than my fixed zoom lens old G6 at 7MP. Considering the small sensor size, details look very good, although some outdoor exposures (with all three bodies) look a little washed out, but that's easily correctible in PP. Impressive exposure on the interiors and dusk/night shots.
I'm curious to see someone producing direct comparisons to the larger sensor M4/3 cameras.
Price seems to be the only issue.
As I say, the camera easily beats my little G6. Still, the G6 works for "family snapshots", has an f/2.0-3.0 lens, shoots RAW, and only cost $115 (used) on ebay. Would I want a clunkier system with buried menus for nearly 10X that cost? I'm sure a lot of P&S enthusiasts are in the same position.
Can you give me a little detail as to how you shot and then post-processed the images you posted the night you arrived in Nairobi? I'm wondering how hard you had to work for them, because they really do look great, even better than what I expected from such a small sensor in such challenging circumstances.
I thought the wrinkles on the front water buffaloes neck were sharpest on the D7000 photo. It may have been the focus though since the D3x should be the best.

Good-looking images you got there, Andy.

Thanks Rodolfo, much appreciated.
My shooting style and post processing is super light weight - I am on vacation :-)
For the night shots in Nairobi:
I used the Manfrotto Ballhead (without tripod) to get more flexibility in point the little camera to where I want it to be. I don't have a small tripod with me.
ISO is set to 100, Automatic ISO is THE killer in night shots - I never use it.
Metering is set to Matrix, AF is AF-S
Timer is set to 2 or 5 secs, whatever fits.
Kamera is set to A(perture)
First comes a test shot of the scenery. A quick look at the historgram is all the basic info needed to correct exposure between -2 and +2 EV, which I dial in for the second shot.
So, mostly you saw the second shots of these scenes, but it goes very quickly.
That's it for the shooting part.
For postprocessing (I use only CNX2):
Take the RAW file
crop a 16:10 part of the scene, mostly its the full width of the photo
resize it to 1920x1200
if needed, I use slight share of ADL.
A little USM (settings: 10/2/0)
Save in the highest quality setting for JPEG
Thats it. Less than a minute per photo on my little ultra notebook.

Hi Gunzorro.
Just one image of todays tour.
wrt to the 3 images. 2 reasons.
1) I only have a subnotebook with me, screen isn't too good, so I use all the default settings.
2) Light wasn't good.
Nevertheless, wanted to share what the 3 cameras do in somehow similar POV - don't take the "results" to seriously.
Quick comment on the camera's: It is fun to shoot video with them, photos are ok (for my view) up tol 1920x1200 final output.
Can one shoot a Safari with a mirrorless SLR? Based on my short experience with the N1 and NEX I would say - yes with a big BUT. BUT don't expect that the rate of keepers or the quality will be comparable to a decent DSLR and a good lens. Speed of operatipon is in a different ballpark as well - specially here.
i think nobody seriously thought that 1 system would not beat any P&S. That was given.
The compliant was and so far is that it is not smaller or cheaper then cameras with larger sensor.
For me, if it is not pocketable, i can as well take my D3100...
tried it in shop, seen no reasons to get it.
