What I find interesting is the apparent reversal of Canon's reasoning for the 1DIV's appeal to PJs and sports photographers, who are certainly a major target market for the X. Back then, apparently a factor for keeping the IV APS-H was in part due to the demands by news photographers for a smaller sensor that allowed use of shorter lenses. I.e. a 300 instead of a much larger 400. Additionally, the pixel density of the IV allows for deeper cropping. This is lost with the X. Meanwhile the price has apparently gone up $2K (all of the D non-s bodies

Exactly, this is what I said when the 1D X was rumoured to have 18MP, that they would now be backtracking, or perhaps hoping we have short memories, on one of the major selling points of the 1D IV; it's extra "reach" or cropability. Now it seems it's about the amazing AF and high ISO noise, although apparently this improvement is largely limited to jpg, not RAW. Also agree that now having asingle camera that pushes up the price another $2K on the 1D price is a bit galling. But it was never ever going to be different if

It would seem the priorities cited for the IV may have been as much marketing points as they were actual priorities expressed by photographers to make the available technology appear to be the ideal solution. The same is likely true for the X. Considering the probable price point, the massive gap between the X and the 5D series (assuming it also doesn't go up with the next version) is the most promising opportunity for a 3D since that rumor started eons ago.

Les, I don't disagree with you in general (though SI got by with 1D classic files for years in the early 2000s ...). As wickerprints commented on the main X thread, the camera certainly appears to be tailor-made for the Olympics. In a sports environment I have never needed to be able to AF at f/8 since there is either not enough light or one is never that far away. For the bird/wildlife photographers I think some patience is in order to see what else Canon announces between now and March, though it would likely mean 'settling' for a non 1 series camera, which I personally would not like. But then, a mythical 3D might be close enough to 1 series build and feature quality. I'm sure Canon will respond to a 36MP D800 with something in the 30MP range. Given that the X is 12 fps @ 18MP, a 30MP camera could still come in at around 7 fps with dual Digic 5+ chips and give about the same pixel density as the IV.

Well, the truth is that, in itself, it doesn't bother me that the 1D X won't meet my needs for wildlife shooting as well as the 1D Mark IV does. My 1D Mark IV has never let me down. It is capable of producing beautiful images, and I could happily use it well into the foreseeable future. What does dismay me, though, is the end of the 1.3 crop 1D-series and knowing that, down the road, there will not be a 1D Mark V.

As an aside, though, even though I'm expressing my disappointment in the direction that Canon has chosen to go with the 1D X, I don't completely rule out getting one. For a large variety of uses, it looks like it will be a great camera. If I do get one, though, it will not be with the expectation that it will be a 1D Mark IV replacement to meet my needs for use with long lenses. That means that I would either have to keep the 1D Mark IV, even though it is hard for me to justify owning 3 bodies, or else I would have to feel comfortable in relying on the 7D for focal length limited situations. Actually, right now, I'm already doing that in many situations, and I don't really feel like I'm being "cheated" when I do use it. But a 1D X and 7D combination would mean that I would be using the 7D considerably more often than I am now. What I have no desire to do is to move to bigger, bulkier (and expensive) additional lenses beyond my current two lens long lens set up. In any case, right now, my thinking is that I can't find any logic in trading off my 1D Mark IV, which meets my needs more than would a 1D X, for a 1D X, but I've been known to be illogical, and it wouldn't surprise me if, 6 months from now, I am struck with a severe case of new camera lust that leads me to lose my grasp of logic and that puts a 1D X in my hands.

Les really said it all. But unlike him, My longest lense is the 400/5.6 for the last two years. Birding and wildlife is my calling. Call me krazy. My wife bought me a new 500/is 4 lense last xmas. I used it for two weeks and sent it back. I missed a ton of shots because it was too bulky and long. I shoot out of a car, trek through swamps, salt grass or will climb a tree if needed. I can hand hold my camera and 400 with one hand and take a photo with no problem. This combination for me is fast, easy, and deadly. I usually trade off every two years. Now what am I or others going to do? The 1DX is full frame. Is it going to give me the quality I'm getting at the same distance with same lense by cropping at almost 2000 bucks more? Some say it won't. Wait and see I suppose. I'm terribly disappointed and will hold on to my IV until canon comes up with something that will give me the same or better than what I have now. I do not want a longer lense to compensate.

So, from the poll results so far, can we conclude that we're paying a high price for high ISO capability?

I like to have two bodies set up for different purposes, long-lens and not long-lens. The 1.3 crop body has the stock focussing screen and is left set up for action shooting. The full frame has an Ec-S screen and is set up for non-action. If only the 1-D X were available, I would still want two bodies, if only not to have to futz around with the focussing screens.

In a pinch, one can back up the other with a few minutes' reconfiguration and some compromises.

Maybe people in focus groups want a single do-everything body, but do such people actually buy cameras at this price level?

The same trend is happening in their lens line. Still no decent short f/2 tele, but a 100mm f/2.8 macro that's neither fish nor fowl; still no update to the 300mm f/4, but a 2X converter to sit behind a new 70-200 zoom.

Canon seems to have forgotten the point behind a camera system.

200mm and 135mm aren't short teles. The 85mm f/1.2 is... f/1.2, and has well-known tradeoffs for the ludicrous show-off speed. The 85mm f/1.8 is the one they ought to update.

You're arguing semantics instead of the point. It's a medium, at least where I come from. Short tele is 85-100mm.

It's you that is arguing semantics here. And if you belive a short tele lens only can be between 85 and 100 mm. That's 15mm between the minimum and maximum length. Then you will probably not see that many lenses made with exactly the right f/2 aperture and specs for you

Hey, I just looked at the half full glass. It means that the price difference between the 1D4 and 1DX is more tolerable. O.K. I'll get the 1DX.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Just to help others in locating the "f/8" reference, below is the quote from the link:
"The only interesting moment was one of the people asking to the Canon rep why this camera has been delayed so much: “Ich habe gehört es hat zu tun mit F8 Blende...”(English: I heard is's because of lenses with F8 aperture...) said the Canon rep"

And this information comes from...... where exactly.

1. We have NEVER EVER........ EVER... had someone come in to the store with a snapped off LCD from a Nikon , Canon, Olympus camera.
Or even a video camera.

2. You know you can leave it in place and never take it out. Just like a regular fixed LCD.

I can't see any cons with the 1DX. I liked the uniqueness of the crop of 1.3x but even then, can't call it a con that it's now FF.

I see a hell of a lot of pro's with this camera. Just hope it comes out on time.

It was a fairly common problem with the Olympus E-3. The LCD assembly wouldn't (usually) break right off, but the LCD frame would crack or break.
