First attempt at controlling lighting. Shot with a Nikon D3000, 55-200/4-5.6, LumoPro LP160 strobe on camera, remote release.
Believe it or not but I shot this in my barracks room against a less than white wall...PP included bumping up the EV a tad, cleaning the wall, and a touch of sharpening.
Josh,
I have little experience with portraiture and less with lighting. Karen (AuntiPode) has tons of experience and is sure to chime in. As well others.
Your military bearing shows through in the posture and directness of gaze, facial expression. To me the lighting looks good. Sharpness, detail also look good. Histogram shows you have room to bring in the black point a bit, heightening contrast and depth to the image.

Thanks Rusty...color does look better now (I'm not working with a calibrated monitor, just stock 15" MBP), but your edit is crazy sharp now...too much on my screen.
