p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · NEX-5N - wide angle

After a long research I decided to go for the Zeiss 3.5/18 ZK.
I found one "like new" at B&H and received it today.
Took it for a quick spin and I think I'm happy with my choice
First it's really small and light. Balances really nicely on my NEX-5N.
The filter size is 82mm, but I have my set ready, so I'm good.
Looks a little funny, like a little mushroom, but again, it's really light.
To my eyes, it produces the similar look to my other Zeiss glass.
Maybe there is no as much micro-contrast as the 21 or 2/35,
but it's sharp and the color and clarity is Zeiss for sure.
Flare is really nicely controlled.
Please post some examples from your favorite wide lenses.
A few of mine:

And as a bonus, one shot from my Leica Macro 60 f2.8,
a nice scene at the end of the day:

Very nice images! I like the last one very much. Thanks for sharing. I am looking forward to using my Leica Macro 60 f2.8 on the NEX 5N soon.

Cheers,

looks good, i've heard lots of people badmouth the lens, but i assume the issues are with the corners that don't matter on the NEX. what made you choose the zk 18mm over the zm 18mm, just didn't like small lenses? i have to say, the zm 18mm is the most attractive zeiss lens to me for the NEX.

my current favorite wide angle on the NEX probably wouldn't be considered wide by many around here – the rokkor 24/2.8. don't have anything new to post from it so here is a single exposure hdr of a previously posted (non hdr) shot, as i'm learning how to use enfuse today:

looks a little overcooked to me but let me know, but maybe that's just because i'm used to looking at other versions of it?

Nice. Thanks for posting these, snowboarder. It's nice to see what the 18 can do on the 5N. That's an impressive amount of shadow detail in the last 18 shot. Was that wide open?

I'm also partial to the 60 Mac shot (love that lens), but, to be fair, it looks like it also got the best of the light.

The sky above the tree looks a little distractingly violet (I just calibrated my monitor, too, so I'm really hoping it's your photo and not my new profile). Everything else looks great, at this size, anyway. How's it look in print?

TBH the shots with the ZK18 look like they are all blurred towards the borders/corners. The central portion looks tack sharp though.

looks violet on my screen too. there is a crazy amount of vignetting that the lense doesn't normally have (wide angle polarization?) and i forgot to adjust white balance before i created my different exposures for enfuse. no idea how it'll look in print, just merged the images a few hours ago. i'm happy with my monochrome print of the shot, but have never been happy with what i'm getting in color – hence the attempt at hdr. i should either pull out the purple or redo the whole thing with different white balance.

Nice shots, Andrew!
That purple is colour shift, for all I know. I can still get some on my Contax 28 G, so getting some from a 24mm isn't that surprising.
FYI, I am soon to try a 18mm ZK on my 5N. I would be very surprised to see it work well, but that is what Luka (denoir) says...

sebboh is using a Minolta MD 24/2.8 -- not a rangefinder lens, so colour shift is very unlikely. Also, Luka tested the ZM 18mm with good results on the C3, not the ZK/ZE/ZF.
Just sayin.

I agree, Aham. But the purple is there, and looks every bit like colour shift, so what is it then? And yes, I know that Andrew got a ZK, which will be helpful to keep in mind when evaluating the ZM's performance on the 5N.

the purple is a photomerging artifact. i just went back and looked at the original file(s) and it isn't there. the vignetting is there but only for this shot in highly unusual light, so i suspect wide angle polarization effects. when i shoot this lens at a white wall there is absolutely no color shift and just a small amount of vignetting.

here is the photo with some color tweaking – i didn't go back and redo the photomerge because i couldn't see any of the violet in the original photo. sorry to drive this way off topic...

This will probably be my bread/butter lens on the NEX, as well as the CV12 when I am able to locate one.

Sebboh, stunning, wow.

I need to find a relatively compact wide angle solution for my NEX...

i'm thinking the zm 18, but i hardly ever shoot wider than 28mm equiv. are you looking for something wider or more compact than that?

Voigtlander 15mm F4.5 has been on my radar, very small.
