Can't say as I want 54 megapixels but I definitely want as much dynamic range improvement as I can get. The one thing I am always looking for is always more DR with my 5d.
Interestingly 54MP would give it the same pixel density as the Sony 24MP 1.5x crop sensor. Luminous landscape says this sensor is 1 stop worse at every ISO than the a900, which in itself is inferior to the 5D II at higher ISO.
Personally I think it ridiculous if true, not that I'l ever fork out the money for the s series; complete rip-off.

Don't get how anyone ever believes this stuff "2 stops better ISO than 5D Mk II"
That right there is all you need to know to know this is BS..."better"? When has Canon EVER posted a spec list/advert containing the words " x stops better ISO than.... "
Better in what way?? More likely to make you toast in the morning??
Even websites whose entire raison d'etre is to measure how "good" the ISO IQ and noise is can't agree on how 'good' high ISO between differing bodies is using incredibly complex scientific algorithms.....but some rumour site puts up a spec list which we all WANT to happen and/or believe and we pounce all over it.

Cropped to 1.6x, the cropped image would still be better than the whole 7D frame, at least at low ISO, sounds good in my book.

I have decided that I am indifferent to the format - if its a 1DsMk3 size body, I would still go that route even thought I would love a smaller body than that. I find that its either lug or not lug so once lugging a full sized 5d or larger body, not much difference in practicality. So Canon, I have been waiting...and waiting...bring me my 5d replacement please!

Well that's not better is it? It's 2 stops higher.
I know I shouldn't be grumpy, but it's getting like the "ZOMG www.totallynotascam-era.org.tv is selling new 1Ds Mk III for $2500....is this legit?"

First, even if this is real, it's not an official press release!
Second, didn't they post something exactly like that when the last few FF and APS-H came out??
It turned out that they were talking about jpgs.
Anyway, Nikon already has 2 stops better low ISO DR, so if that is what they mean, people should only hope they can pull it off and not be talking like it would be beyond them!

yeah, I picked out a LOT of good rumor stuff there in years past that ended up being true, he hasn't had as good sources lately but in the past man some of the future roadmap hints and other stuff, if you read between the lines, was pretty informative

I'm always surprised how often these threads sprout (like weeds in a garden I suppose), but most of all how anyone can believe them. 90%-99% nonsense...
BTW - I'm sticking by what I said a long time ago (here's one from August)
"if there's a new 1Ds it will be 2012, and a 5d in very late 2012 or more likely 2013"...
As always, I'm hoping I'm wrong...
I actually find CR0 rumors more credible than yours .

read between the lines !
rumor one: the new 1ds IV will be 25 mp.
Rumor two: the new 1ds IV will be 54 mp.
say the camera is released and it's 32 mp, then all of the peanut gallery and rumor koolaid drinkers all say, "WOW the rumor sites were right, they are credible, but if you read between the lines..."

And that's a good thing. We need different opinions here so some of us can be wrong...
Let me know how no new 1Ds/5d works out for you in December.
CR Special today...What flavor Koolaid would you like? It comes in Grape, Cherry, Strawberry, Apple* (requires brain surgery for most people to swallow ), Orange, etc. The choice is yours until you've had the fist sip...

maybe not by dec but sure as heck before late 2012 and 100% before 2013 (2013 )
i tend to not shoot so much in the winter anyway, if it is not in my hands by fall foliage, which seems unlikely, i may just wait until spring for a perhaps lower price even if it does arrive later this year (it would be ironic if canon finally releases a cam without a gripe to it for the first time since 20D and then for the first time since 20D I don't jump on it on release date)

Only by virtue of digic V. If 7D mk II has digic V and keeps 18MP it will be better again. I hope Canon don't get into this stupid race with Sony, and bump the 7D II to 21MP+.

We'll have to wait to find out, but I don't think anything will happen this year.
I'm just guessing of course, but basing my thoughts on what Canon has done over the last 9 years concerning the 1Ds, and 6 years of 5d bodies. If they follow their previous releases, we should see the Digic 5 used for many (3-6 months) in P&S cameras before release in a DSLR body. If they release a 1Ds4 in spring 2012 (April perhaps), and follow with an updated 5d 6'ish months later, it could be in the September/October time frame, which is late in the year to me.
Of course Canon could release something unexpected too.

The effect of the (removed) AA filter could be even more important than the Digic V. Without an AA filter, less sharpening is required to get the same micro contrast. Sharpening brings out noise, so the end result without AA filter may be better even though the per area quantum efficiency is a bit lower.
The idea of high pixel count and no AA filter is extremely compelling to me. If it turns out that the 1DsIV and 5DIII will go in the direction indicated by this rumor, the 1DsIV will be the first "s" that I consider, since it will give me medium format resolution, pro AF, and highest pixel density for wildlife. No crop camera will be needed for a while. The high cost can be justified for me this way, and especially that I get to ultra high resolution with my existing lenses, at lower cost than a new MF camera, and with 3 years of use before eventually a lower end model gives the same resolution.

As pixel counts grow the need for AA filter is reduced. The effects of moire will be rarely seen as pixel size of the sensor decreases. I'd expect to see very weak AA filters at most in the near term. Most MF cameras either don't have one or allow you to remove it as needed.
