Actually... at ISO 100, the V1 shows better detail than the E-5, GH2, and 5N... both in RAW and JPEG. Interesting...

nope, looking at the feathers in the studio shot all of those show more detail in raw (no surprise), don't care enough to look at jpeg.

The criticisms here are from people who are photo enthusiasts. The Nikon 1 will be bought by 'ordinary' people, and apparently orders are high in Japan. It also has video which will help it sell. Nikon is out to sell product, not please photo forums.

Personally I think it is far too expensive, with a limited range of lenses, compared to micro 4/3.

The V1 has the least detail of those actually.

It will take several rubbish product generations before Nikon can no longer rely on their heritage.

Yeah, I suspect it would be easier with a good quality EVF than with a OVF though, to keep the body-size down and the viewfinder-size up. A digital FM with a new mount with a shorter register-distance.. :P But yeah, if they release a D800 sized like a FM, I might call it a day and be happy.

Edit: I want a less deep body (smaller grip) and a way smaller viewfinder bump. I want less weight, without getting a plastic body and I want an unicorn.

Sorry, but forget it. If they would launch a small, well built camera, you would want small and well built lenses too, right? That's not really possible with AF and decent speed, which 99% of the buyers would want.
I think the Leica M system is the only one left that will allow the "right direction" because of manual focus. Everything else will either be smaller sensors with large and slow lenses like the NEX series, or large cameras with fast AF lenses.

Our dreams on this forum, about adaptability of old MF lenses, is of course of little interest for Nikon, Canon and the others.

Of course, and well, if Leica would do EVF/OVF-hybrid cameras in the future (removing the close-focus-problems, the framing-problems and the tele-problems and the wide-angle-external-finder-problems...) I think I would pay the premium.

The Nikon lens seems to be defective. Sharpness varies wildly across the frame. And why couldn't they wait until they had access to a prime lens. Most of their other studio shots are made with primes. Useless test.

Apart from that, high ISO looks rather impressive coming from such a small sensor. Even at ISO3200, it's close enough to Sony to be a relevant competitor. One stop behind? I think Nikon has a winner here, and I'll put m4/3 on hold until I've tested the V1.

Curious points for these cameras
1. high speed brain
2. high speed AF
3. high speed shooting
4. Super slow motion ( for me anyway)
5. C-F converter
6. For bird shooters ( which, I am not ), 200mm becomes 540 mm. Instead of spending 50K for 500mm lens, spend 1k and you get the reach.

What I am not sure they will support is the F converter would support manual F lenses. If it does,100MP becomes 270MP, which could be interesting.

I think your last point about it being too expensive compared to micro 4/3 is exactly why ordinary people will not even consider this Nikon. Once you get to this price level, even ordinary people will likely do enough research to realize there are better options (low end DSLR, Olympus, Panasonic or Sony mirrorless). The Japanese market is traditionally quite different than western markets.
