p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · NEX-5N + Zeiss

Just came back from a great road trip with my NEX-5N
and a set of Zeiss ZK lenses (thanks to Novoflex).
This camera is better than 5D II and Pentax K5. I'm serious guys.
The DR is wider, shadows and highlights are better, the colors are better.
I'm loving the experience and my Zeiss glass really shines on this tiny camera.
I forgot to switch to RAW so those are all JPEGs.
I took most of my shots with 100MP, this lens is by far my favorite.
Zeiss 100MP ZK + the last one is from 2/35 ZK.

Those train shots are really nice. Looks like you are getting great results from that combo!

Great photos. One thing that is striking are the colors. Lush and vibrant without going all funhouse like it does on my Rebel XT.

Very encouraging and just love those photos. I am also using K5 with FA* Ltd lenses, so am waiting for you to comment on how the NEX 5N performs with these lenses. Thanks.

Great shots, and the Z 100 seems to perform just as well on a cropper as FF, though I'm not sure if I'd personally like the FOV of ~150mm

Also really nice to see the 5N JPEG engine at work - looks really good. I'll be getting mine soon

Did you do any work to the JPEGs after the shot, or are these essentially SOOC?

Will try some today. Will also try the 15 DA Limited, my adapter
allows for some kind of aperture control, this lens seems to be the most
forgiving for that, so it might actually work.
The wide lens is the biggest challenge, it looks like Zeiss 18 ZM
is the only lens widely recommended...

Agree, that's why I got the Macro-Elmarit-R 60. It's the only Leica which
can be compared to the Zeiss drawing style from all the examples I've seen.
It's different from my short experience, but I really like it.
For me 25mm + 35mm + 60mm is a really good NEX set,
I just need one wide lens to add to those and I'm all set.
But I know I will be using the 100MP, it's juts too good.
It's the hardest to use on NEX, not because it's big, but because
is really heavy. But the Pentax mount version has a much better shape
than the Canon version - it's much more narrower on the mount side
so when you add the Novoflex adapter, it gives you a great grip.

Hey snowboarder, some very nice work here.I'm a bit surprised you haven't had more response. Not just about the photos but your premise.

I'm getting excited, it looks like the 5N will be a great body to fall back to if the NEX 7 image quality is found disappointing, which many, myself included, hope that's not the case.

Excellent series snowboarder.

Great shots! Did you use the EVF? You seem to have nailed focus very precisely.
Btw. have you compared the 5N to the C3? Some (Steve Huff) seem to indicate better IQ from the 5N.

Very nice shots Andrew, although I'm a bit surprised by your conclusions. The NEX-5N supposedly has the same sensor as the NEX-C3, but I have been very underwhelmed by the results. The only advantage over the 5DII I could point to would be the latitude in the shadows.

Could it be that the sensor is differently configured in the 5N?

the sensor is certainly configured somewhat differently – the 5N can go to iso 100 while the C3 cannot.

I don't know, maybe I'm not as demanding as you are?
To me I don't need anything more from my pictures, I'm getting
the excellent quality from NEX-5N, it will only improve with Adobe RAW support.
The shadows in 5D II are very poor, Pentax K5 was already a huge improvement.
NEX-5N is an improvement over K5.
Better shadows equals a higher DR. Sharpness is excellent too.
This train shot is as good as it gets and don't need/can't really imagine
it to be better image quality wise...

I also discovered one more thing - I simply don't like lenses which are too small.
I have a higher comfort with a larger lens. A size of something like 2/35 ZK
with an adapter is perfect on NEX to me. Enough grip and a large MF ring.
I decided to sell my Pentax pancakes, even though they are great lenses,
they are too small to me.

No, all those are focussed using magnification and focus peak on the LCD.
But an EVF would make it more comfortable, I'm sure.
Will wait for the NEX-7, and then maybe I will get one for my 5N...

Very nice photos. I have 5D Mk2 and am waiting to see if NEX 7 is worth 2x the price. This camera would be great to use with tele like Leica 180mm 2.8 APO + 1.4x APO. The crop factor would extend the reach nicely.

Well I love that Zeiss look Make me miss mine. So you think the IQ is better with the 5N and Zeiss glass than with the 5 and Zeiss glass?
