Well, it is interesting at least. Definitely answers the "it isn't pocketable with the kit zoom" objection. About the size of the 20/1.7. Based on the branding it is claiming better OIS than the previous kit lenses.

I doubt this is what a lot of people here were waiting for, but as far as the larger market goes maybe it will play really well. I can never predict such things well so I won't even try.

I'll be curious to see the 45-175. If it is also very compact, and more importantly higher IQ

This is much more interesting to me than the monstrously-sized (and somewhat ugly) Sony E lenses.

Wow, this is rabid (in a good way). If the image quality is all right, the 14-42 could make a nice companion to an MFT body, or a last ditch lens for emergency.

it appears the 14-42 is compatible with all m43 cams...just not the 45-175. I have no no interest in the telezoom, but honestly, after seeing it in action on the dpreview videos, the 14-42 looks pretty awesome. Super compact, supposedly great image quality, and with the multi-speed zoom, it can zoom in and out very quickly, which is lacking in most every power zoom implementation to date. A GF2 or GF3 with this will be MUCH smaller than an NEX with kit zoom...good strategy by Panasonic. This would be great with the E-PL3 or the Pen Mini too.

One other thing of note is that they specifically mentioned that the X line will not all be powerzooms, but will include conventional zooms and primes as well...looking forward to some really high quality glass.

MFT for new 14-42 seems pretty ok. Would be nice with GF-1, though not sure if it will work.

Still, dunno.. performace wise, 20mm f1.7 seems better.

I tried MFT but dismissed it as a viable alternative to DX. I was satisfied with the image quality and delighted with the size/weight, but the battery life was awful. Power zooms will only make this problem worse. As Jman13 points out the new generation of lenses won`t all be powerzooms but I think it`s a backward move which is aimed more at video users. I have no interest in video.

A new incarnation of the 14-35/2 and 35-100/2 which are smaller, lighter and cheaper would undoubtedly win many fans.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

The lenses are compatible with all m43 cameras from all manufacturers past and present. Some of the initial information on DPR was confusing but has now been clarified.

Calculated MTF charts are always suspect, but looking at these lenses there is a boost in the 20LP curves perhaps on account of the new lens coatings. The 14-42 curves look even better than the 14-45. The 45-175 actually looks worse than the 45-200 in some cases. On the other hand, it seems like many real world copies of the 45-200 had issues and maybe the 45-175 simulated MTFs are more realistic.

Anyway - time to wait for actual tests.

Hey, it doesn't change length when zooming. Cool.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Batteries get several hundred images per charge and its not hard to carry a spare battery (or two) if you know you'll be shooting all day.

Given that video seems to be a growing segment, and actually in demand with lots of users, wouldn't the fact you have no interest in it suggest your backwards, not Panasonic ?

I mean, I personally don't care about video myself either, but just because a company introduces something I personally don't have interest they are going backwards ?

Didn't know that progress and innovation was so closely tied to matching your specific needs. Quite the trendsetter you must be.

Yah I saw that from the other thread. Unfortunately it was night time and I couldn't update because I was busy sleeping.

Has anyone heard about a couple other Panasonic lenses in the works? Someone on another site had posted some pics of a 12-24 and 35-100, both were faster glass (F2 or probably 2.8?)

I think that pancake zoom is awesome!!!! Don't know that I'll run out and buy one since my collapsible Oly 14-42 is pretty decent and small... and I already own it and got it for free, but still, very excited about the direction Panasonic is going! Their initial kit level zoom lenses were way too big for m43 IMO, not this may push Oly to make even smaller lenses too. Awesome all the way around!

but lord help you if you want to change monitors without diving into the command line. the main problem with *nix is that integration of peripherals often requires people to actually understand something about computers. much like my camera, i can't just hand my linux computer to a random family member and expect them to be able to use it.
