Cats are naturally very territorial. It's best to get/adopt them at the same time, but of course that's not always possible. Our 2 cats have a love-hate relationship with each other. They do often sleep in close proximity to each other but the younger/smaller one is always on guard. Occasionally the smaller one would throw a playful one-two punch to the bigger cat which is hilarious to watch ... she would run up to him and deliver a left-paw and right-paw blow to his face really quick and then run for cover!

There is something that makes me feel good to know that I'm not the only one whose multiple cats can't stand each other.
With my 2 cats (whose pictures are on page 3 of this thread), the 7 1/2 pound female is constantly harassing the 18 pound male. But, if he dares to get within 6 feet of her, she starts to hiss and growl, and, if he gets any closer, she starts screaming in a manner that would make you think that she was being attacked and that her life was in danger. There have been multiple cats in the house for decades, and this is the first time that there have been two who were not been able to make peace with each other even after having been together for 5 years. At this point, I've given up hope that it will ever happen.
On the other hand, they both get along great with the 90 pound Golden Retriever with whom they share the house, but it did take the female cat over three years to get to that point. For three years, she refused to be even in the same room as the dog. Then, one day, I think she decided that she was tired of being left out, and she walked into the room with the dog as if she had been friends with it for years. So, if that could happen, I guess that maybe there is still hope for the two cats deciding to get along.
