I've recently gotten interested in fisheye effect, after laying off it for about 30 years (Sigma 16/2.8 -- the Canon is much sharper, even wide open).

The effect can be over-used, just like anything else, making it trite and banal.

But I'm sure there are a lot of "bulbous" shots out there that will make us all proud.

Here are a few from today.

Canon 1Ds2, EF 15/2.8 FE, processed in LR3.

yes, done right a fisheye is a pretty useful lens. I use them for landscape often. If you keep the horizon level and centered, the effect can be pretty subtle, depending on the features of the landscape.

Mainly I use the RZ67 37mm fisheye, which like the canon 15/2.8, is a great sharp lens, even wide-open. A little color fringing on both in the corners, but it's pretty minor.

Ed -- Thanks for your input. I agree on the fringing -- I use -30 on the red/green in LR to fix it pretty nicely.

I've always drooled over the FE for the RB67 and the Pentax 67, but never gotten one. I can see definite architectural and landscape uses.

Any advice on good de-fishing software? I use LR, but it doesn't do well (if any) at interpolating the corners/edges, which become excessively soft when stretching in straightening.

In general, you won't find the corner will do well with defishing software. Most of the time, you'll have to crop, yielding a significantly smaller FoV. It's the nature of the beast considering fisheye lenses tend to compress a lot of data into the corners.

As for defish software, fisheye hemi is pretty good for some uses. It doesn't work well in all situations. It mostly faltered when the camera was close to the camera, or the fishy effect was very pronounced.

You can use PTGui (Paid) or Hugin (free) to defish your images. Both programs have similar GUIs. PTGui is a little more user friendly, but Hugin is free. The big difference is that Hugin uses Panorama Tools, whereas PTGui used to use PT, but has since been rewritten to be stand alone (though, apparently you can still use PTGui as a front end for Panorama Tools).

Here's an example of a photo I took with a fisheye lens that has been defished with PTGui or Hugin (can't remember off the top of my head, but they both perform a similar function). You'll see the original fisheye photo, the defished photo in rectilinear projection at maximum resolution and a crop from the 2nd image.:

Wouldn't that be most of the time?

kakomu -- Thanks for your examples -- that's pretty much what I've found from LR3 as well. I'll post some soon with some before/after on the de-fishing.

carsten -- Terrific shot! Great color and detail! That's part of my hope too, to get some architecture and twilight use out of the lens. I did find the lens has some minor, but noticable, coma in night shots with stars, but otherwise seems to be quite sharp. You obviously have a good sample.

The fisheye lens can certainly be challenging -- and rewarding! Lots of great uses for landscape and architecture -- dramatic and fun.

Certainly it can be overdone, just like ultra-bokeh and a pin-point of sharpness. But that is the risk with any "alternative" angles of view or focus.

Here are a few shots showing the images in a somewhat altered state. I offer unretouched jpg out-of-camera (resized), examples of the LR3 lens profile with its version of "de-fishing", and more examples of partial defishing done with the manual profile adjustment under Distortion (not completely corrected).

As you will see, any defishing with LR lens profile (turning the image into rectalinear style, with crop) severely impacts the sharpness of the edges/corners, well into the main image. Still, even cropped, the images are extremely wide angle.

All shots at f/8 on 1Ds2.

Here's a 15mm FE shot with three options for viewing. Landscape was shot close to a middle horizon, for least distortion.

First is the shot as it comes from camera.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c80/gunzorro/036N9977-2.jpg

Second is slight "de-fishing" by using LR manual distortion adjustment at +100.
Slight PP on shadow areas and cropping due to the inward reverse barrel distortion.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c80/gunzorro/036N9977.jpg

Finally, the auto de-fishing effect of using the LR lens profile.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c80/gunzorro/036N9977-3.jpg

Although distorted, the second version provides an extremely wide angle of view, and viewers/clients may accept the slightly odd look, since it takes in areas that may have importance.

The third de-fished version is obviously lacking in details where it has been stretched in the corners. Perhaps there is software that can interpolate these areas to look sharper?

Carsten, best use of fisheye I've seen I think

Gunzorro, car photos are great, and furthermore - thank you for giving me an excuse to post a photo from my Zeiss F-Distagon 16mm!

How Graduated Neutral Density Filters Work by Kiddi Kristjáns, on Flickr

This is a 100x150mm Lee Graduated Neutral Density filter held almost directly in front of the glass of the lens. If it weren't for the bent filter, I guess the photo wouldn't pass as a fisheye.

Thanks kiddik! Unfortunately I can only think of one such place in Berlin One of these days I will have to just go out with my D3 and the 16mm mounted and see what I get.

That is a pretty unique use for a grad filter! Very neat demonstration.

I use a fisheye quite a bit. Not enough to dominate my photography, but I use it where it is called for. Here are some of my fisheye shots:

Jordan -- Great stuff! I particularly like the second baseball stadium at twilight.

I'm going to try to make it up to Hollywood Universal Studios' City Walk this Saturday night and get some FE shots of their lights and tourist crowds.

Jordan -- Ah! the old Sigma 16mm Filtermatic! I used to have one in the 80s for my Canon film bodies.

I haven't owned one since then, till now.

Shot with Canon 5D.

Three more from me. It turns out that my FM Meet Berlin shots were also largely fisheye shots, and these are the best three, from the government quarter of Berlin.
