p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 1Ds2 custom flash question..

Recently purchased a 1Ds2, I can't seem to find the custom function that will keep the shutter speed between 250 and 60 when using an onboard flash. I use this on my 1D4 at certain times, works great.

Maybe no such thing on this beast? thanks, Al

It's been too long since since I used mine with flash (or without flash, for that matter) but I think you might need to use Personal Function 4 to restrict the shutter speeds. That, or use Manual exposure mode and set the exposure for ambient lighting and let the flash take care of the rest. Perhaps P mode will do it for you but I'm that A mode will not because A mode assumes that you want it to get the ambient exposure right and let the flash do any fill lighting.

To set any P.Fn you need to connect the camera to your computer with a 6-pin Firewire 400 cable (not a USB cable) and run the appropriate software. The latest Canon utility does not support the 1Ds2 but some older versions will. So might some non-Canon software. I'm not sure what operating system support you need. The 1Ds2 pre-dated Windows 7 and Vista and 64-bit OS.

Set the shutter speed limits to whatever seems appropriate - say 1/60 for slowest and 1/8000 for fastest. When using a flash the 1/8000 speed will not be allowed unless you have enabled high speed flash sync, so it does not matter that it is faster than 1/250.

The trick with this personal function and personal functions in general is that in-camera you can disable them (i.e. use the default value or option), or enable them (to whatever you have set via the computer link), but not change the settings in the functions that have more than two choices. Therefore, when you connect the camera to the computer via firewire you should set as many personal functions as possible to whatever you think might ever use in the field (not necessarily using them all at the same time) so that after you disconnect from the computer you will have maximum flexibility via the P.Fn camera menu.
