+1

Really incredible images. Wish I had taken them. Absolutely love the zebra photo.

Also very informative post regarding the sensors and lens resolution.

I tried, I really did. But, my will power just wasn't up to it. The shiny new box sits beside my keyboard as I type this, beckoning me to unpack it and play.

Denoir, that shot of a chroicocephalus ridibundus (?), your 4th shot...

I'm impressed.

I wanna see some crops! I've had a few on the non-is versions and I just love those things. These lenses taught me to ignore the brick wall test, because they are great in the field. Anyway, I'd love to compare some crops of real images from the three variants, maybe four if you want to count the pipe.

This last one is meant to also show the powers of the amazing IS.

What focal length was that last one taken at? I have gotten sharp shots as low as 1/30th on my f4 IS at 200mm so shouldnt surprise that the 2.8ii can do it also.

Measly 85mm. But just sayin'. If it's of any relevance, the floor that I was standing on was moving

First, I'll say that I agree that the MkII is freaking awesome. It's really a marvel of engineering. I don't use mine much because of its size but it has never disappointed

Wow, superb shots!

Shane: That singer and conductor juxtaposed in B&W is my favourite, telling both the vulnerability and power of performing like this.

Oka: Great colours and subtly teasing pose.

Daan: Nice to see some members of your family, theay are beautiful and so are the images.

Bobby: Rich and juicy colors in those well-composed bird photos, even with a tiny teleconverter.

Mark: Just incredible! My hat off to you.

William: That could be a friend or foe, nicley captured expression and the graphical composition is just right.

Joshua: Beautifil images as always, and the snake image really shows off the absence of axial color fringing in the lens.

Claude: Frozen energy in perfect focus and timing.

Jeff: A very happy shot, even with selective focus, drawing attention to the "better" half

John: She must be very happy to get these portraits, and the lens helps too.

TeamSpeed: Who would belive the old lens would work, the heartbreaker doesn't want to be depicted any sharper.

Starnut: That's just too good to be true.

Stan: When the adorable mini-Stan and mini-Mrs grow up, they will tell their kids about the shuttles, and that grandpa took the best images of them ever.

Luka: How do you have time to go on safari? I thought you were always busy with charts and technobabble ;-) Excellent and moody, the Zebra is my favourite too.

Corvus: I can really feel the taste of the sand just before the hands touch the ground.

Richard: Close to the action there!

rd4tile: Some great fun and great use of background too!

Shane again: Those kids are very camera friendly!

It is impossible to follow up the quality here, but the lens can be used as an ordinary lens too, taking pictures of nothing, on a tripod with ND filter and colors removed: (This is just an excuse to follw up with a later technical post about the prime-like sharpness of the lens)

As for this however.. yes, you might say that. If you use a good Canon prime on a modern Canon camera you'll see only a small difference between it and the 70-200/II. The thing is that the sensor is usually the limiting factor for the prime. So when the next gen 40, or 50 megapixel cameras come out, you'll see a larger difference.

To take an extreme example - the highest resolving lens on record is the Zeiss 25/2.8 Biogon ZM (it's an M-mount rangefinder lens) which becomes diffraction limited at f/4 when it hits a max resolution of 400 lp/mm,

You are not going to believe this: My 70-200 II is sharper than my 300 2.8 IS.

With teleconverters it is easier to see. I did a comparison with the 2X TC III and the Kenko 1.4 stacked, on the 7D. Stopped down one stop. Tripod moved to equal the framing (It may be 1% off). Prcossed in C1 with default sharpening. Before somemone starts thinking my 300 is not up to snuff, take a step back, breathe, and realize what you are looking at: 100% crops with stacked teleconverters on the 7D. When I compared my 70-200 with 2X TC against my 400 5.6, someone suggested my 70-200 was not a very good copy.

Zoom to the left, prime to the right. The spatial frequency of the lines in the dark oval is 175 lp/mm out of the lens. A FF camera with 300+ Megapixels will challenge the lenses something like this:

Daan: thank you

Really!?! The 300 L is supposed to be one of Canon's sharpest lenses.

In any case this is one awesome lens. I think it is safe to say it is the best 70-200 regardless of brand.

Love the samples here.

This thread makes me want to take mine out. Though not in the manner of a local politician. I'll take some pics here and there as soon as the haze clears.

Now if we could just get a 5d with real AF we'd be all set.

I understand that perhaps the 5d2 doesn't have autofocus as quick and accurate as some cameras, but I take some issue with the idea that the 5d2 doesn't have "real" autofocus. I don't have a "real" birding lens, but I've not had a lot of trouble getting birds in flight in focus with reasonable success with my 5d2/70-200 combination, even with extenders. Sure, if I ever get a real birding lens, I'll probably also get a 7D body, but just because the 5d2's AF isn't as spectacular as that of the 1Dx bodies doesn't mean it's not "real" AF.

5D2 + 70-200II .... what a killer combo - This is a repost from another thread but it shows a real world example of why the lens is so unusual for a zoom.

200mm @ f2.8

100% crop - who needs longer lenses? Just crop like crazy - seriously, it's pretty darn good looking for a 100% crop. Look at the bokeh.

By golly, Mark, that is good. I though only 7D could allow that kinda cropping.
