I have both. I agree.

Very happy with my 70-200 MK II on the 5D II. Here are a few of mine wide open. The closer MFD on the MK II also helps with portraits.

Not sure why they would say that. I used my 70-200 VI @ +4 MA on my MKIII for several years and it was very good. My new 70-200 V2 still requires +2 MA on my MKIV and 5DMKII so I don't have any problems with small amounts of micro focus adjust with these zooms. Since I use them almost exclusively at f2.8 it is important to have the focus adjust spot-on.

Where did you hear this? Page 169 of my 1DIII manual discusses many aspects of MA, but doesn't mention this one.

Stop this topic!!

My bank account can't take it anymore.

I think I will end up trading my 135L and my 24-70 for this lens if this continues.

I will just live in ignorant bliss with my MKI version, I have been quite pleased with its images wide-open. I am posting these here, then unsubscribing so I don't see any more samples.

Found this one taken with my MKI and the 5D classic, again, nothing to complain about.

I read it one of the many Canon tips\white papers that they have on the camera. I can;t for the life of me find it now though. The document I though it was in (I remember the "use MA for emergency adjustment of faulty camera body, line) doesn't have it. If I come across it in my old 1D3 stuff I'll post it up.

Here's what the Canon 1DIII white paper says.

AF Micro-adjustment

AF precision is adjusted for the camera and lens to fall within the lens' maximum aperture's depth of focus. However, there are users who want to adjust it more minutely. They have had to go to a Canon Service Center to have it done. AF micro-adjustment is a feature developed for these users. The user himself can now finely adjust the AF focusing position. The adjustment range is ±20 steps in front of (-) or behind (+) the point of focus

The adjustment increment of one step differs depending on the maximum aperture of the lens. You should shoot, check the focus, and adjust it. Repeat this procedure to adjust the point of focus. When a lens registered with a point-of-focus adjustment is attached, the point of focus will be automatically shifted by the correction amount set. If you set 1 (Adjust all lenses by the same amount) or 2 (Adjust by lens) and press the INFO button, the adjustment screen will appear. The focus shift amount per step is calculated by multiplying the maximum aperture's single-side depth of focus by 1/8. If 1 is set, the focus shift amount will always be the same number of steps (but the actual amount will vary according to maximum aperture) for all lenses. If 2 is set, the focus shift amount will change for each different lens. You can register the focusing shift amount for up to 20 lenses. Then, when you use one of the registered lenses, the focus will shift by the set amount.

Note that since the camera does not recognize the unique ID of the lens, the same shift amount will be applied to the same lens model even if it has a different serial number. In the case of zoom lenses which have variable maximum apertures, the focus shift amount is technically different at the wide-angle end and telephoto end. However, since the focus shift amount cannot be adjusted individually for the wide and telephoto ends (there is only one shift amount per lens), adjusting it for the telephoto end is better. If an extender can be attached, the camera recognizes whether it is 1.4x or 2x and makes a different shift adjustment from when no extender is attached. When an extender is attached, the adjustment screen will display the lens name and extender name. To delete the registered lens settings, select 1 or 2, then press the Erase button. All the registered AF micro-adjustment settings will be cleared.

Can't say that it has made my 200/2 unemployed, but definitely less employed.

That is EXACTLY what I did. I loved my 135L, but I always hated the 24-70. it was never wide enough, long enough, or fast enough! (I know, I know TWSS...)

I dont mis the 24-70 one bit, but ironically I DO miss the 135L. But the 70-200mk2 is sharp enough and good enough to help me forget about it.

I will be buying back either the 85L or 135L when I have the cash to compliment it...most likely the 85.

The 135L is just an amazing lens for the price!

I keep the 135 around because of the size of the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II. If I want something light, small, long and fast, the 135 fits the bill.

I just chopped in my 24-70 and 70-200 I for a 70-200 II. Very pleased, will post some when i've had a chance to use it for something more interesting than shelves and DVD's

First, I'll say that I agree that the MkII is freaking awesome. It's really a marvel of engineering. I don't use mine much because of its size but it has never disappointed

Wow - and yes, this lens is totally prime-like at f2.8.

As for this however.. yes, you might say that. If you use a good Canon prime on a modern Canon camera you'll see only a small difference between it and the 70-200/II. The thing is that the sensor is usually the limiting factor for the prime. So when the next gen 40, or 50 megapixel cameras come out, you'll see a larger difference.

To take an extreme example - the highest resolving lens on record is the Zeiss 25/2.8 Biogon ZM (it's an M-mount rangefinder lens) which becomes diffraction limited at f/4 when it hits a max resolution of 400 lp/mm, MTF10 or 200 lp/mm MTF50. A sensor that would make use of the full resolving power of the lens would have to be (200 *36*2*200 *24*2)/(1024*1024) = 132 Megapixel. And that's for MTF50. If we really want the max possible resolving resolution, we're talking four times as much ~527 Megapixel. The 70-200/II as good as it is won't be as impressive a few years on while the prime lenses will have a longer lifespan.

That's in fact what we are seeing with the 70-200 MkI now. It was a top performer when the sensors had fewer pixels. When the 5DIIs, 1DsIIIs and whatnot came along it lost its status as a top performer as the limitations of the zoom became apparent with the increased pixel density.

The MkII will most likely face the same thing - as long as the camera producers keep increasing the number of pixels on the same sensor area.

No way I'd get rid of my 24-70. But I did offload a 70-200 f2.8 non IS, 30D, hardly used lens cases & Lowepro harness & belt. Wallet & bag remain a similar weight.
