In a post on page 2 there's a picture of the info from the camera screen.
Only the in-camera battery is lighting up and not the AA-batteries. Could it be the same for you?

Use rechargeable batteries. I prefer eneloops. Duracell or similar will not give you 8fps. I went through this same scenario when I bought my grip.

Take the enel3e battery out of the body. This will assure that you are powering off of the grip. Make sure you have selected the correct AA battery type in the menu. The lens your using had zero effect on max frame rate. AA batteries will give you 8fps as long as the camera isn't shifting back to the in-body battery. Also the 14bit raw only slows down the D300. The d700 will shoot 8fps 14bit raw, any compression settings, any lens, with AA batteries.

Alkaline batteries will also give you 8fps but for only 500 or so shots. Not sure who told you they don't but you were given poor info.

Correct. Alkaline should give 8fps.

So should Eneloops (mine do and these are exactly what I use).

However, my Energizer 2800mha NiMH batteries don't.

Hating to state the obvious, but I will...
make sure your SS is fast enough to accommodate 8 fps

The info I was given was when I put Duracell batteries in my grip and saw no speed increase. I then tried rechargeables and it worked like a charm. Maybe I was doing something wrong but that was what I experienced. Thanks for the feedback!

AA batteries -- any AA's at all -- will provide 8fps until they're too dead to do so. What "better" AA batteries will give you is a longer life.

I've used Duracell alkalines, Eneloops, and Energizer rechargeables (2600 mAh). Eventually settled on the Energizer rechargeables for my entire house as I can get them anywhere, they cost twice what alkalines cost, but they'll take 500 or so charge cycles before being depleted. Works out to 500 fewer batteries in landfills, and about $300 for each AA that I use left over in my pocket. Been using Energizer rechargeables since 2008, and I still have not had to throw one out yet.

One hint for long life in rechargeable batteries: use a slow and high-quality charger. Fast chargers heat up the batteries too much, and as a result they don't store as much charge and their lifespan is considerably shorter. I use a MAHA 8xAA charger that was $80, and worth every penny.

Over the course of a couple of years, a set of 8xAA Energizers in my MB-D10 grip would give me nearly 5,000 shots on a D300 before needing to recharge. This was reliable, repeatable, consistent behavior. Eneloops will do about the same. Alkalines will have a much, much shorter life.

I believe I had 14bit raw turned on, turned it back to 12bit and that seemed to have did the trick!

Thank you much!

Forgive my second post,
But Can you recommend a high-quality charger?

I'm sure there are several good brands. I bought MAHA on the recommendation of several other FM'ers, and I've found it to be fantastic. Just ran a quick web search and I have one similar to this charger, but that only does AA and AAA:

http://www.photonlight.com/batteries-and-battery-chargers/maha-powerex-mh-c808m-professional-aa-aaa-c-d-battery-charger/?Source=GDF_PriceGrabber&gdftrk=gdfV21383_a_7c1216_a_7c5216_a_7cMH_d_C808M

Mine was about $80 IIRC. Independent charging circuits for each battery, a "fast" charge in about an hour and a "slow" charge in about two hours.
