Recent Canon used lens prices

Here's a few figures to show recent price trends for some popular Canon EF and compatible AF lenses. The EF 50/1.4 USM and EF 70-200/2.8L IS (Mk I) have risen quite dramatically. Quite a few other EF lenses have as well, but these two are probably the most significant. Over the same time, the prices for more expensive lenses like the EF 300/2.8L IS have continued to rise steadily, but not as sharply in recent months. That could be partly because they're already so expensive, and partly because there are fewer sales. In the mean time, the Sigma EX 70-200/2.8 APO price hasn't really changed very much at all.

Lest you think it's only a few recent lens sales that have pushed the 50/1.4 and 70-200/2.8L IS prices way up, here's a quick summary of the lens sales data used in the two right-most points on the respective figures. Most prices are for auctions with multiple bidders. None are for 'New' lenses.

EF 50/1.4 USM
. 2011-02-01 [M-] $328, average of 12 sales, all below $400
. 2011-05-07 [M-] $415, average of 11 sales, 10 above $400

EF 70-200/2.8 L IS
. 2011-02-01 [M-] $1614, average of 8 sales, all below $1750
. 2011-05-07 [M-] $1872, average of 11 sales, 9 above $1800

I'll probably post a new version of Lens$db at the end of this month.

I also posted a similar thread on Alt used lens prices, https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1007318

Thanks for this info.

I can verify the 50/1.4. I just sold one at $400 with local pick-up. They are in great demand. The lens was like new, with aftermarket hood. Zoom!

The only reason I sold is that I'm moving up to try the Zeiss ZE 50/1.4.

If the 70-200 2.8IS seriously sells for more than 1800, I'm selling mine right now. I'll hang onto the cash and buy the MK2 when I can.

It seriously does! Here's the current sales that are in the pending version of Lens$db.

[M-] =AVERAGE(1775,1895,1825,1854,1850,1806,1850,1987,1995,2016,1740)

[E+] =AVERAGE(1525,1425,1575,1200,1380,1225,1275,1425)

I might sell my 24-70L, as it's not getting a lot of use these days. Here's where its prices are right now.

[M-] =AVERAGE(1250,1176,1223,1256,1225,1200,1250,1348,1278,1250)

My 70-200 2.8IS Mk1 is near mint, not a mark on the damn thing. New IS assembly, and I've had the IS on 2x since the newest IS ass'y was put in it. Calirabted/clean/blah blah by Canon.

I see one sold for over 2000...I'll sell mine for 2000! lol.

big country -- On eBay? I had mine there, but sold it to a local and cancelled the auction, which had several bids the first day of five days.

I've not done well on FleaBay, but my gear is often sold within minutes on FM B&S. I sold a mint 50 1.4 USM with hood for $325 shipped. Probably could have gotten $25 more if I had the friggen box!

Of course, whether you like it or not, it helps to use PayPal as it's pretty much the standard of payment on the 'net.

Those used prices never stop to amaze me
In my local shop they have 3 used 70-200 IS lenses. They ask for prices between $ 1500-1600 on all. And that's a bargain price that will go down about 100. And a new 50/1,4 cost less than $ 450

Lars, buy them all up and sell them for 2K like I'm selling mine!

Yes do that. It's only $ 600 to get the new mkII version with warranty

Absolutely!

I've got a few events to use it for this summer, but when I'm in the clear, I'll get by with my 135.

The idea for me would be to sell it before the rebates kick in, and then buy the new one when the rebates are out.

Is that one lens over $ 2k for a used 70-200 IS mkI ? And a few others just below $ 2k

Jim, thank you for the update.
Clearly, this is not the time to enter into the field of dSLR photography in a big way.
The question is though: will those prices come down in the future once the gear supply builds up to normal levels ? Prices and ratchet tools have much in common.

Do you keep track of any other used canon lenses prices? I remember I read someone's PDF about.

I would be very surprised if Canon has a rebate program this Spring. With the supply down and prices up there is no reason to have a rebate.

I publish the Lens Price Database, Lens$db: http://tinyurl.com/jcolwell-lensdb.

Here's the abstract for the current version (v16).

The Lens Price Database, Lens$db, has prices and physical specifications for over 400 lenses, including: all Canon EF prime lenses and EF Extenders; all Canon EF L-series zoom lenses, plus a few others; a large selection of “alternative” manual focus lenses from Carl Zeiss, Leica, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Voigtlander, and other brands; a variety of lenses from Sigma, Tamron and Tokina; and, a selection of Medium Format Mamiya 645 lenses that are more-or-less compatible with EOS cameras, and with the Mirex Tilt-Shift adapter. The prices are mostly for used equipment in excellent to mint condition, based on eBay sales and list prices at many camera stores.

Jim & Peter, you're welcome.

I don't think we'll see the prices coming down very much (if at all). I think the prices will actually continue to increase, at least over the next few months.

Jim

I think the bigger issue would be if Canon thinks it will lose market share to Nikon/pricing. At the moment, probably not. Also have to wonder how much of the rise is due to currency exchange/value of dollar. I've been sitting tight on buying camera gear and have instead been buying lighting etc. and some historical cameras/lenses. They seem to be at a low ebb. Buy low, sell high.
